The US Environmental Protection Agency announced on Tuesday that it would like to expand the rules it made last year related to greenhouse gas emissions reporting. In addition to the reporting requirements it drew up for 31 industry sectors in October 2009, the EPA now wants details on carbon dioxide and methane emissions from oil and gas production facilities.

While Congress continues to debate energy and climate bills, the EPA is preparing for a scenario in which it would regulate greenhouse gas emissions without legislative prompting, and it feels that the oil and gas industry - which emits quite a bit of methane - ought to be subject to the same requirements as other industries.

The proposed rule adjustments will be open for comments for the next 60 days, and they will be on display at two public hearings held in April.
