The healthcare industry has a sustainability problem. Globally, healthcare accounts for 4.4% of all global emissions, and at least 20% of hospital waste comes from single-use plastics.
Many people have had it with the shelter-in-place mandates. After all, there has never been a time in history when the whole world stayed home for two or three months. Humankind isn’t exactly prepared for staying indoors for so long. But there’s light at the end of the tunnel: many parts of the world are starting to breathe a sigh of relief as the outbreak numbers drop and the quarantine orders are relaxed.
New rules on lighting and energy efficiency could further push the US away from global goals to cut down emissions. The Trump Administration announced on wednesday September 4th that it will be rolling back requirements for energy efficient lighting. What this could then lead to is an increase of greenhouse gas emissions and thus worsening of climate change.

Recently, New York City’s Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo have advocated for a more rigorous plan of action to reduce New York’s contribution to greenhouse gas and carbon emissions that exacerbate climate change. The state has announced a multi-pronged “New York Green New Deal” to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 with legislation, including the Climate Mobilization Act (CMA) and the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.
During his 2019 State of The Union Address, President Trump spoke on how America can begin to remediate on the harmful effects faced by nonviolent offenders. With this idea, president Trump spoke on introducing the First Step Act. He said that, “The First Step Act gives nonviolent offenders the chance to reenter society as productive, law-abiding citizens. Now, states across the country are following our lead. America is a nation that believes in redemption.” As the act’s name suggests, this is a major step towards a new form of justice.
During the past few months, legislators of New York have developed and passed multiple acts in attempts to address climate change and significantly reduce their state’s contributions to pollution and carbon emissions. These acts have collectively been referred to as “New York’s Green New Deal” and have been strongly advocated for by Mayor Bill de Blasio.
We see an opportunity to help the Democratic Presidential candidates speak more constructively about climate change.
