Would you even consider taking a swim in a dumpster? Macro-Sea, a group of friends from New York "developing projects they find interesting," is introducing a new approach to a day at the pool. After discovering the first "dumpster pool" in Athens, Ga., at the home of Pylon's rocker Curtis Crow, the team is spreading the idea nationwide.
After 12 days of structuring, Macro-Sea opened the first "dumpster pool" in Brooklyn, N.Y, this summer. Working with three 60-foot dumpsters, positioned in an H-shape, equipment was cleaned, painted and sanded down. Pools were lined with plastic and sand for a soft floor, and then filled with 19,000 gallons of chlorinated water. The Brooklyn location was dressed up with barbeques, lounge chairs, cabanas, etc. Experimenting with the first site, the pool had a surprising approval from the community.
Macro-Sea will extend their designs to strip malls nationwide, beginning their next project at a deserted mall in Atlanta, Georgia. David Belt, president of Macro-Sea, said "We're just looking to take these buildings that were made for a standard purpose and jazz them up a bit. Make them more exciting."
These dumpster pools are just a part of Macro-Sea's bigger plan to bring "green" skate parks, amphitheaters, etc., to the forgotten malls to make the sites more appealing. If anything, the changes will teach valuable, earth-friendly lessons of reusing old materials.
So what do you think... would Macro-Sea make a splash in your area?
