India To Put $21 Billion Toward Renewable Energy

The Wall Street Journal reported Aug. 10 that India anticipates $21 billion to be invested in renewable energy over a five-year period from 2007 to 2012, according the chairman of Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd.

Since 2007, $3 billion has been funneled into the initiative, the WSJ said. Nearly nine percent of India’s capacity is renewable energy in the form of wind, small hydroelectric, biomass and solar energy, it said.

The country will be adding 14.5 gigawatts of capacity to generate renewable energy by 2012, WSJ said.
