As we begin to get into the groove of summer, we anticipate all of the things this season brings along with it. From ball games to beach trips, summer holds something special for everyone. There is one activity that most people will be taking part in, and that is the summer picnic. Many have made this simple outing into a more extravagant affair, such as having a picnic for family reunions, holidays and birthday parties.
No matter how you decide to picnic this summer, there are a few simple ways to make sure that yours is fun as well as being easy on the environment. With our earth giving us so much beautiful space and scenery that we can enjoy while being outside, it’s only fair that we give back by helping to keep it just as beautiful as it always has been.
To start off, pick a location close to home. Walking or biking with your picnic companions can be a lot more fun, not to mention eco-friendly. If you don’t live close enough to do either of those, taking public transportation would be your next best bet, rather than taking multiple cars and meeting at your location.
Summer is a great time of year to be kind to the environment because so many delicious foods are in season. Stop at your local farmer’s market and pick up some healthful and tasty picnic staples for your day. If you go organic, you get extra eco points. Some in season choices for June include strawberries, melons, carrots and potatoes. Not only will you be doing something good the earth, but you’ll also be doing something good for your body.
When it comes to your silver and plate ware, there’s one simple solution: reuse! Paper products are wasteful and unnecessary. There’s no need to buy disposable when it comes to helping the environment.
After enjoying your food, be sure to throw all of your garbage away and recycle any bottles that were used. Most areas have cans for recyclables and garbage, but if yours does not, take it home with you and dispose of it there. If you see other trash in the area, don’t hesitate to pick it up. We all have to help one another to keep our planet clean.
