This is one of the profiles in an ongoing series covering next generation agriculture. We are seeing an increased trend for indoor farming across the United States and around the world. This is a positive trend given that local farming reduces adverse CO2 emissions from moving food long distances. If you would like us to review and profile your company, just let us know! Contact Us.
Company Profile: Swainway Urban Farm
This is Columbus, Ohio's first urban farm producing microgreens and mushrooms.
Here is some of the “About Us” content: Swainway stands to promote the radical idea that organic food will restore personal and community health while building an economically viable business.
We pride ourselves on using innovative, intensive farming techniques while restoring the land through intentional wildlife habitat and composting. Our model is to grow by hand for our community - resulting in the freshest, highest-quality food in central Ohio.
Joseph Swain, head farmer and visionary, began living the sustainable food dream with a backyard garden in 2007. His natural green thumb and attention to detail led to growing the finest freshest food possible.
Joseph quickly discovered the joy in sharing good food and organic gardening methods with others. Thus the Swainway mission expanded to encourage others to grow their own food gardens.
Friends, family, volunteers and a crew of hard working individuals join Joseph and to seed, tend and harvest on the farm as needed.

To date, the cost of man made lighting has been a barrier for indoor agriculture. A new generation of LED lighting provides cost effective opportunities for farmers to deliver local produce. Warehouses and greenhouses are both viable structures for next generation agriculture. Here is one example of next generation made in USA LED grow light technology to help farmers: Commercial LED Grow Lights.
