Baking soda is gentle, non-toxic and environmentally friendly. Its green cleaning, scrubbing, and deodorizing properties make it an extremely versatile thing to have around your kitchen. Below are six great uses for baking soda in and around the kitchen.

  1. Keep your cutting board free from contamination and odors by regularly giving them a deep cleaning with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Begin by spreading baking soda over the cutting board surface and then sprinkle vinegar over the board. Let the mixture bubble for a few minutes before rinsing the cutting board with hot water.
  2. Add a tablespoon of baking soda to your hot and sudsy dishwater to help cut grease and speed the removal of sticky foods on dishes and utensils.
  3. Baking soda is also a wonderful alternative for abrasive stainless steel sink cleaners, which can be scratched by even some liquid cleaners.
  4. A combination of baking soda and vinegar will help open a clogged drain and even deodorize both the drain and garbage disposal.
  5. Create your own dishwasher detergent by mixing 2 tablespoons baking soda with 2 tablespoons of borax.
  6. Keep your coffee tasting great by brewing up 1 quart warm water and ¼ cup baking soda.
