Last week, Cree, Inc and Habitat for Humanity broke ground on the world's first Habitat for Humanity house to be lit with all LED (light-emitting diode) light fixtures. The home will be located in Durham, NC, feature various Cree lighting products and is expected to be completed by October of this year. The Durham-based Cree LED manufacturer is sponsoring the house and many of Cree's employees are volunteering to help construct the structure.

The home will feature Cree's newest LED downlight, the CR6. Once completed, the LED house is expected to save approximately $250 annually in electricity cost as compared to traditional lighting. The sponsorship of the Durham LED house comes as part of Cree's previously announced three-year, $1.5 million pledge to provide its high-efficiency LED downlights for all new Habitat home built in the United States.

“At Cree, we strive to provide consumers and businesses with cost-saving and energy-efficient LED lighting products to help ease the burden of rising energy costs,” said Chuck Swoboda, Cree chairman and CEO. “We’re pleased to further our partnership with Habitat for Humanity by supplying LED lights to its U.S. homes and to personally be involved in building this particular home, as it benefits one of our hometown families.”

“Habitat for Humanity of Durham recognizes the benefits associated with LED lighting and sees this home as the ideal way to continue our goal of building affordable and sustainable housing for Habitat partner families,” said Miguel Rubiera, executive director, Habitat for Humanity of Durham. “We thank Cree for not only providing beautiful lighting, but for helping our homeowners save money on their electric bill.”

We at GREENandSAVE are excited to see Cree expanding the use of LED technology into the residential sector. The future homeowners of this LED home will benefit from lower electricity bills and less energy consumption. As the price of energy continues to rise, expanding the use of LED technology into the commercial sector will save even more money and energy. If using LED technology in a small home for 7 hours a day can save $250 per year, imagine how much money (and energy) a large business operating 12-24 hours a day could save.
