On Tuesday night, at Washington University in St. Louis, a coal industry executive took on an environmental activist in a moderated debate.

Fred Palmer, the senior vice president of government relations at Peabody Energy, argued in favor of a coal-powered world, and Bruce Nilles, the director of the Beyond Coal Campaign for the Sierra Club, argued against it.

Palmer said, "Coal will now be our path to greater prosperity, industrialization, a clear environment and a source of low-carbon energy for both the United States and the world in what we call green coal."

Nilles called Palmer's "green coal" / "low-carbon energy" claim into question: "This promise of capturing carbon is simply a promise that hasn’t been realized."
