British Supermarkets Drastically Reduces Plastic Bag Consumption By 48 Percent in 2008

A campaign to reduce the number of environmental hazards in Great Britain has been largely successful over the last three years since its inception. Since that time, supermarkets have reduced their plastic bag consumption by 48 percent. This past year, only 372 million bags were handed out, as compared to over 700 million bags in 2006.

The supermarkets placed a voluntary target in 2006 to halve their plastic bag consumption, and while they missed out by only 2 percent, it would be hard to call that anything but a major win for environmentalists. The danger of plastic bags is twofold, as they clog up landfills, taking decades to decompose, and they also pose a threat to marine life when they are discarded into the sea.
