Caught up in the political debate over the American Clean Energy and Security Act are the ramifications of American workers and home heating bills; however, many are missing the larger point. If no actions are taken to curb the rising global temperatures, many species around the globe will cease to exist.
It is important to free ourselves from the dependence on foreign oil, but it is also important to remember the creatures who cannot protect themselves from the encroachment of their lands to the poor living conditions they must suffer through.
Environmental Defense Fund has launched a new program called “Warming and Wildlife” that documents the threat faced by seven “ambassador species” across America already struggling to survive. Without any help, these animals might just not make it. The list of seven includes:
- Sugar Maple
- Monarch Butterfly
- Leatherback Sea Turtle
- American Pika
- Canadian Lynx
- Tufted Puffin
- Polar Bear
Some of these may be familiar, while some are not. However, each is important in its own right to its natural ecosystem. When you remove one seemingly insignificant part of a habitat, many will naturally follow them to the grave. Check out Environmental Defense’s campaign to see if you can get involved.
