The National Academy of Sciences, a trusted government advisor on scientific matters, is calling for major legislation to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

While the Academy had mentioned in the past that climate change is a problem, they had never gone so far as to recommend a carbon tax or cap and trade system. In the three reports released on Wednesday - requested by Congress in 2008 and collectively titled America's Climate Choices - the Academy urged Congress to take drastic action to raise the cost of using fossil fuels.

According to Academy president Ralph J. Cicerone, America's Climate Choices "is the most comprehensive report ever on climate change." He says it explains "why the U.S. should act now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and why we should have a national strategy to adapt to the inevitable."
