On Tuesday June 1st at 10PM EST, BRAVO is airing the final episode of 9 by Design. GREENandSAVE’s President, Charlie Szoradi, had a chance to interview the co-host and design star Robert Novogratz.
Robert and his wife Cortney are a dynamic duo of designers that have recently garnered tremendous attention through their firm Sixx Design, the 9 by Design TV show, and their recent book, Downtown Chic.
On the eco-front, Sixx Design has been ahead of the curve. In the interview, Robert told Charlie, “We have been working with salvaged materials since the inception of our design business over fifteen years ago, even before it was discussed as a socially-conscious thing to do.” Robert and Cortney’s love of the old and respect for the craftsmanship of the past is one of the driving forces behind the company, along with a desire not to waste and to re-purpose whenever possible. Robert goes on to say, “From old doors, tiles, windows, floor boards, and more, Sixx Design has used salvaged goods on every project we have worked on. The quality of these goods from times past is excellent, and they tell a story that gives new design an added dimension.”
One of Sixx Design’s latest projects is the Bungalow Hotel. The entire project has a “green” theme, from salvaged wood to antique mirrors, old frames, and repurposed couches. Not only conscious of not wasting, Sixx Design was also able to bring high style to the hotel at a low cost, making it an even more rewarding experience all around. Robert emphasizes that, “The hotel itself is quite chic and very cool, there is nothing like it on the New Jersey shore! Plus, we were able to deliver the look of very high style without the high cost.”
While MTV’s Jersey Shore hasn't exactly given the region high style or sustainability connotations, the Bungalow Hotel ain't Snooki’s Jersey Shore! It was named one of the top ten chic-est hotels in the world by Elle Magazine, T, The New York Times Magazine, Travel and Leisure, Conde Nast Traveller, and more.
The show airs on Bravo at 10/9c. For more information, have a look at the 9 by Design website. The online resources include bios on Robert and Cortney, plus blog posts, episodes, games, photos, videos, and even spring cleaning tips.
Charlie enjoyed the time he spent with Robert, and he loved the story of the Bungalow Hotel: “Robert and Cortney are so focused and genuine in their interests as a design team to find solutions that have great style and sustainability. I encourage our readers and anyone interested in next-eco-generation design to tune in and see how Robert and Cortney transformed the Bungalow Hotel.”
