In lighting, lumens are the measure of the total output. Lumens per watt (lm/w) is the common metric to define efficiency, but the less used lumens per dollar (lm/$) is a key metric to define value. We have provided the breakdown below for a fixture line, to illustrate that lm/w and lm/$ are not parallel in some cases. As the output of high bays increases, the lm/w does not go up or down, but in this case the lw/$ increases with the higher output fixtures. This observation is relevant for manufacturer’s representatives, resellers, distributors, and end users, because the made in America factor may have more “value” for the higher output fixtures.
The following examples show the lm/$ increases from 72 to 90 as the fixture output increases for this US LED manufacturer. While the lower output fixtures are competitive with Chinese imports, the higher output fixtures are very competitive.
