The Student Conservation Association, an environmental service organization for high school and college students, is sponsoring a national “Green Your School” contest for high school students. Since when, you might ask, is “green” a verb? Apparently, “greening” can refer to any number of qualifying activities, though painting one’s school green doesn’t seem to be one of them. The prizes will go to students who have created sustainable environmental community service projects within their schools that have the potential to continue on in a meaningful way after the student creator has graduated and moved on. Projects must have been started after August 2008, and the first-place prize of $5000 will be awarded to the winner’s school. Not only does the contest encourage environmental awareness and activism, but it also provides incentives for students to engage with their communities, to learn how to mobilize others for a cause, and to accept personal responsibility. Leave the paint at home—this is a different kind of greening. Link to the contest and submissions guidelines: http://www.thesca.org/green-your-school
