GREEN RE-FURNITURE in Philly

Are you ready to re-use and reinvent... where you sit?

Who hasn't received, by a well-meaning family member, a piece of furniture that upon first glance is less than a showstopper? Well now Molly Worth, owner of Chairloom, an Ardmore based company that salvages and reupholsters vintage furniture, has come to the rescue. Her website, chairloom.com, showcases her current inventory and sold items.

Repurposing an old chair or sofa is obviously more eco-friendly than buying a new piece, but Molly ups the eco-ante with modern and eco-friendly fabrics from Hable Construction, Rubie Green, and Oliveira Textiles, among others. The balance of traditional furniture paired with modern, kicky fabrics speaks to the eco-trend at hand. For example, the pair of stools she reupholstered in a raspberry and cream chevron fabric are brilliant and will always look classic whether at the foot of a bed or under a console table.

Explaining the two principles that guide her work, Molly says, "One is the value of being found. Second is the importance of second chances. These two principles give added meaning to my work of using old pieces instead of new, and giving them a second chance."

More often than not vintage furniture is a triple threat: better made, more personality, and less expensive than the mass produced items that can be seen any which way one looks.

The Greater Philadelphia area is no exception to the national averages when it comes to waste. Almost 90 percent of what is thrown away could be recycled or reused, and furniture is no exception. For unwanted goods, or necessary but cheap additions, it could really pay to try out some of the following locations:

  • The Salvation Army
  • Goodwill stores
  • Ebay
  • Craigslist
  • Flea markets
These are perfect places to unload or snap up a well priced table, sofa, or chair. If the lines of a particular piece of furniture are appealing, remember that it can always be updated with a fresh coat of low or Zero VOC paint and new fabric. Or just contact Molly. She can assist in fabric consultations when your home needs a new look.
