Good Morning! Welcome to the GGHS. Well, it appears we’re moving right on through an early spring, and of course, as we go into the summer, and $4.00 a gallon for gas as well as a nice jack in the electric bill for the air conditioning, we're faced with some very interesting opportunities.
This is probably just the beginning of even more intense energy situations that we’ll be facing all summer, so we have some ideas to help...and you know, we always try to give you the best, helpful green information available, so we thought we'd start off with some great websites to get ahead of the high energy prices we’re likely to see this summer. We're also going to present a green list like we did last week.
You know, I’ve been doing this long enough that I take a lot of what I’ve learned for granted, so it still shocks me when I discover how few people know what a “ Whole-house Fan” is or how it works. You see, before there was air conditioning, people would sit outside on their stoops or porches in the evening and they would have the “Whole House Fans” on in the house pulling the cool, evening air through the house to cool it down for sleeping. Whole house fans allowed the family to survive the summer heat… sometimes, if need be, folks would sleep downstairs just to stay a couple of degrees cooler...
So, the point is, don't get addicted to your air-conditioning early this summer... Try out this new/old trick and see how much it saves you on energy bills. If you don’t have a Whole House Fan, use window fans in the upstairs windows (on the exhaust setting) to pull cool air from the open downstairs windows...
This is where you should grab a pen, because I’m going to give you some really useful info. As you would suspect, we always get asked about buying high mileage cars... people ask: which ones are better? should we wait for the next generation of hybrid?, etc... and with gas prices so high and going higher, you may be thinking about whether a new fuel efficient car is in your future... ya know, one that gets better than the 12 to 15 miles a gallon that you get now... well, if you are, you should go to, www.greenercars.org .... this is a great resource to help you choose an energy-efficient car... and while you’re at it, jump on over and check out www.fueleconomy.gov... this site compares the fuel economy of all cars available for purchase in the U.S.
And for those of you who want to get way ahead of the curve and who are also very industrious... go to www.veggiepower.org.uk... this is a site that is promoting bio-diesel as a green fuel that you can make it home... now not everybody will be able to do this, because there's only so much deep fryer fat and French-fry oil available... but if you start now and make contracts with your local restaurants, it's actually pretty easy to make your own fuel, right in your garage... so enjoy and have fun...So grab a cinnamon-raisin English muffin or your Aunt Edna and prepare to be amazed…
I’m Doug Hunt and next to me is my co-host, Paul Hughes
I had a great time as one of the speakers at Rotaries and at the Earth Day meeting of many regional business people at Savano Bistro, just across the line in Kennett Square.... apparently,.. we have a few crazy fans out there too.... I want to thank Savano Bistro and Oliver Lawrence and the Verrrico Management\E3 crew for putting on such a great event. 50 or 60 people got to network and share great ideas and begin to think about moving their companies and lives further and further into conservation, recycling, and further away from wasting natural resources and energy..... if you haven't been to one of these events it's quite exciting to see the wheels turn and see the networking in the aisles and people really starting to feel hopeful about making a difference in others' lives as well as their own.
Although that makes me feel very good, today I want to address something I am upset about....I keep getting letters and cards from acquaintances and friends about how many days are left in George Bush's presidency.... and although I want to thank them for this political reminder...... I'm not sure I quite understand this... is this like a countdown to someone's birthday?.... it feels like Christmas and my friends can't wait for it to come... I am not sure I was aware of the depth of their love for this man...
So If you are like me, after watching the primaries and trying to understand who is feeding John McCain his information while he is on tour and watching those two guys standing on both sides of him whispering what to say in both ears and he still gets it wrong, I am not sure he's the guy for me.... it seems like McCain's obsessed with the war, and right or wrong I'm not sure we can afford that either.... It looks like Hillary Clinton will do anything to get elected including employing Karl Rove like tactics, and as much as I like Mr. Obama… it seems like he's a bit young, politically green, and he may be selling political technology that he hasn't proven yet... as hopeful as he is, he has as yet to make much happen across the aisles in Washington, and that's what is there to work which is a much these days....
So I am feeling a little nostalgic ... and this countdown has got me nervous..... at least with George Bush you know what you have.... you know exactly what you're going to get.... and you're sure to get it every time.... I'm going to miss that certainty.... that atmosphere of absolutely no promise whatsoever... you didn't have to worry about the polar bears, or the bog turtle, or global warming, the economy, the war, or health care... because you knew he wasn't worried about it...
I say, that's the kind of confidence and certainty we need in the White House... someone who doesn't worry... someone who isn't scared of the entire population of the United States, most of the Middle East, China, and the huge island of Korea..... the definitive, and unwavering enigma of political somnabulence and absolute adherence to an entrenched doctrine... basically someone who does the same stuff over and over...
But at least we could depend on that... we could depend on those moments when we knew he was going to veto that energy bill and anything else that was poised to shift energy policy in the direction of sustainability.....
So I am counting down the days, sadly so.... I'm going to miss George Bush.... I'm going to miss his predictability... and his constant amusement... and the admiration and love that he had for our economy, well at least for the upper 10%...
So be sure when you vote for the environment, that you read the policy statements of each candidate and you compare their records for voting on the environment, because as we all know by now, it's not really the president who calls the shots so much as the party leaders, philosophers, financiers, lobbyists, and political bosses who move agendas forward in the direction of the party's philosophy.... sometimes presidents just look like little boys who've been told what to do and they're doing it......, because their dad said so....
And with that said, why don’t you thank our sponsors.
Thanks to: – CMI Solar Electric - Energy Services Group - Suntrust Mortgage of Christiana – Green and Save.com - Scott Birney for donating so much time towards these projects and also Mark Unruh for the great music… to the rest of the Sin City Band: Stevie, Bob, Dave and John – Thanks. Noted Environmental leader and educator Lester Brown, author of Plan B 3.0, shows us how we can change in enough time to save life on earth, as we know it.
Of all the resources needed to build an economy that will sustain economic progress, none is more scarce than time. That is one of the key messages of PLAN-B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization, the newest book by Lester Brown of The World Watch Institute – available as a free download at earthpolicy.org.
Plan A -- the western fossil-fuel-based, auto-centered, throwaway economic model -- is not going to work for China, India, or the 3 billion other people in developing countries, and it will not continue to work for the industrial countries either.
It's time for Plan B -- an all-out response at warp speed proportionate to the magnitude of threats facing civilization. The four overriding goals of PLAN B 3.0 are to stabilize climate and population, eradicate poverty, and restore the earth's damaged ecosystems. Available as a free download at earthpolicy.org We’ll be right back...
