Overall Segment #1 – 9:00

Music & Introduction – 5:30

Good Morning!!! Welcome to the after Earth Day edition of The Great Green Home Show. We hope you participated in something green on Earth Day, which was last Tuesday in case you weren’t paying attention, although it's nearly impossible not to these days, with everyone jumping on the green bandwagon: from Lowes and Home Depot, to every other article in the newspaper, to all the TV commercials, where the talking heads pronounce how green they are and the green directions their companies are going.

We're glad that so much attention is being paid to this very solvable problem of global warming and pollution… and we’ll be talking little bit about that today, by the way. We’re going to discuss greenwashing and what you can do about supporting companies that go green and companies that say that they're green. (See greenhome.huddler.com) We’d really like to encourage everyone in every company to stop the waste, conserve energy and promote the use of renewable products and energy. But this is always a great time of year, because everybody gets so hyped up about Earth Day and we’d like to encourage parents and teachers to use this as an excuse to educate your kids and help them understand the impact that our everyday behaviors have on our planet, our economy and our lives. And we might as well get used to it, because eventually we’ll have no choice in the matter. The only future that we have is one that’s sustainable, uses renewable resources, recycled products from cradle to grave, and actually concentrates on regenerating the natural resources that we’ve already squandered.

The message here is that this is very do-able... that's our theme today… that this is all very POSSIBLE... all we need to do is make some changes... some of our habits, some of attitudes, some of our perceptions. Please don’t let the word “change” freak you out. Everyone always translates the word “change” to mean some sort of horrific sacrifice that will ultimately cause the complete and utter ruination of your lifestyle. We’re not talking about the kind of change that our parents our grandparents were forced to make 50 or 75 years ago, which they did gladly to secure our future. We’re talking about small changes, based on what we know now, that will allow us to continue to live in a manner to which we’ve become accustomed, and reclaim what was once and could again be the paradise we inherited.

So grab your Kind Cakes (and if you don’t know what those are, you need to download last week’s show) and prepare to be bombarded with great information.

I’m Doug Hunt and next to me is my co-host, Paul Hughes.

I feeling very earthy still from all the Earth Day celebrations....THIS is such a great time of the year with spring coming and all of the different events all across the United States.... I hope that people were able to attend some of them and I hope that they noticed that even Pope is an avid environmentalist... pretty much 24/7.... yes even the Pope slipped in some green news as he was visiting the United States

I had a great time as one of the speakers at an Earth Day meeting of many regional business people Savano Bistro just across the line in Kennett Square.... apparently we have a few crazy fans out there to.... I want to thank Oliver Lawrence and Varrrico Management\E3 for putting on such a great event. 100’s of people got to network and hear great ideas and begin to think about moving their companies further and further into conservation, recycling, and further away from wasting natural resources and energy..... if you haven't been to one of these events it's quite exciting to see the wheels turn and see the networking in the aisles and people really starting to feel hopeful about making a difference in others' lives as well as their own.

I know I get sappy about this stuff but I just can't get over the fact that there's this groundswell... yes, a groundswell, and although we all believe that the leadership should be coming from our elected officials in Washington right now… in reality, the leadership is coming from the ground up... and of course this makes a better foundation but unfortunately it takes longer... it was great to see businessmen being involved at this level AND This Means that we are moving closer to morel change and gathering people that can move larger groups of people towards that change.... so thanks to Jackie IVY and Buccini Polen and and Sovano Bistro for putting on such a great event.. and really trying to keep this rolling for the rest of the year...

So this year, my pledge is: I'm moving to one vehicle.... downsizing.... putting a cap on the things that I need and as I go through this process, a painful, confusing process by the way, I am noticing that I can see more things on the other side of this step, that I didn't see before, that I probably could to give up and don’t really need....so lets talk about a key component in this necessary and helpful change we need to make to build a more sustainable world....the dreaded word.... Doug and I are going to continue our dialogue a little from last week we talked about change versus real sacrifice

Change versus Sacrifice... Let’s talk about it... What does it really mean?... let’s define in the context of REAL Sacrifice...

  1. Car pooling is change....melting your car for warplanes in 1939... and sending our Boys and Girls abroad to fight... what if we didn’t need the Mideast oil???
  2. Change is taking Mass transit.... taking your car money and paying for war bonds, metal shortages, walking to work....
  3. Change is Reducing energy consumption at home watching what we use..2nd fridge, lights, games, etc....... sacrifice is taking 30 to 40% of your income to buy kerosene so your children can study at night
  4. Change is changing your diet so that we may add more food to the world's table and eat healthier.... sacrifice is not eating for a day so that your children can eat because world food prices are too high
  5. Doug add some more

Today’s Topic – 3:00 Sponsored by: Suntrust Mortgage of Christiana

Usually, this segment has a list of things, appliances, energy-saving practices, green products and ratings, assessments of certain green businesses... generally, this is an information section... however, if you were at the green Expo you probably got lists and lists and lists of different things to do to reduce your carbon footprint, energy use and hopefully your monthly bills... so this week, we’re moving on to a different topic....

This is a topic that very few people want to touch and although we try to keep it light here on the GGHS, I think this topic has a silver lining if we stand any chance of keeping this environmental titanic afloat. And since everybody's pumped up today from the Great Green Expo, I think we can talk about it... Politicians don't want to talk about it... but we should talk about it.... and that's Population... we don't do doom and gloom here but we need to say something about worldwide population growth... We have to figure out a way to not just slow it down, or even stop population growth... we actually need to reduce the worldwide population. We actually abuse the soil in order to try and find ways to feed our population.... the technology for cloning cells for food production is risky at best... so what can we do?

I think the first thing is just a discourse... we need to find some way to educate people, so that they understand why the earth is ill-equipped to deal with our current population… we're overfishing the oceans (disappearing Salmon on ABC Ha), over-farming the land, and using up all of our natural resources at an accelerated rate these days to grow food... at this point we’re losing topsoil at an alarming rate... I figure we need some new ideas here...

Well, there’s one simple way to solve all these environmental problems in a very quick and sustainable fashion, and nobody wants to talk about it… and that’s controlling population... with a goal of trying to reduce it worldwide over the next 35 to 40 years so that our oceans and our farms can support the level of human life and all other life in a renewable way. That's it… It's not so difficult in concept... we need to brainstorm this idea as quickly and as collectively as possible... come up with a game plan... and get people to buy in and take a proactive approach...

ME and Doug Brainstorm and goof around.......

I'm not sure which combination of ideas or what alliances we need to make to move this key piece of our problem... I do know we can do it and we can do it quickly...

On the plus side we have a new atmosphere on the planet now where people are waking up to the fact that we need to mobilize quickly in order to save our planet, our food stocks, Our Species and agriculture not to mention the world for our children that they can sustain and live and well...

So because it's been hard to talk about population and so many religious groups and other groups are so opposed even thinking about reducing population.... we've also got to talk about how to support the population we have until people realize that we can no longer support the population we have and keep a sustainable eco-economy........ and make no mistake I'm still not giving up on talking about population control we have to make people aware before they starved to death...

So... one answer is take a look at your diet.... as you know for every pound of beef not produced we save 19 pounds of grains.... we are not trying to get people to give up the beef they love, not entirely... just to reduce their consumption of beef by half, along with an increase in the consumption of local greens and grains... don’t support ethanol… support conservation....

Another way to go which will help... Can the food that you buy from the community supported agriculture group that you've invested in, buy local food and produce, local canned goods, and modify our meat centered diets... and one way to learn about that will be at Francine's new community market out in Hockessin.

We’ll be right back...
