The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) has recorded many exposures to household cleaning substances that were serious enough to require treatment in a health care facility. Astonishing, according to the AAPCC the largest number of occurrences of poisoning in 1993 were due to cleaning products:
- drain cleaners
- toilet bowl cleaners
- soaps & detergents
- and more.
NOTE: Chorine Bleach is the #1 chemical most frequently involved in household poisonings in children in the U.S.
Over 75,000 chemicals registered with the EPA and less than 20% of them have been tested for toxicity. If your home is anything like the average U.S. home, you generate more than 20 pounds of household hazardous waste each year (the EPA designates toilet cleaners, tub and tile cleaners, oven cleaners, and bleach as hazardous waste).
Childhood cancer rates jumped 26% between 1975 and 1998.
The number of children in special education programs increased 191% from 1977 to 1994.
Childhood asthma rates increased 100% between 1980 and 1995. Source: www.HealthyChild.org
Women who work at home have a 54% higher death rate from cancer than women who work out of the home.
EPA studies indicate that an elevated concentration of household chemicals persist in the air. Some are suspected of causing or are known to cause cancer in humans. Learn More at www.epa.gov. Here are some chemical ingredients to look out for:
