Music & Introduction (Doug) – 1:00

Introduction – Good Morning!!! Welcome to another edition of the Great Green Home Show.
We’d like to thank everyone who’s tuned in today, as well as those of you who are listening online at wilm.com.

As always, our goal is to inform and entertain as we try to give you the latest information available regarding all things “green”. We’ll talk about how you can reduce your carbon footprint, save some energy, and most importantly, save some money...

I’m Doug Hunt and next to me is my co-host, Paul Hughes. Good morning Paul, how was your week? How was your Thanksgiving?

Paul: Which one?

Doug: How many did you have?

Paul: I had two. One with the family and the one at your house.

Doug: I wish I only had two. I had three and I still have 6 or 7 pounds of turkey in the fridge…

Paul trying to sound like Bubba from Forrest Gump – Turkey sandwiches, turkey salad, turkey croquets, turkey tettrazini, turkey ala king, roasted turkey, baked turkey, fried turkey…

Doug: Well, I’m certainly thankful that I have no shortage of food. In a minute I’m going to quiz you on what you’re thankful for, but first… we must re-announce the Expo.

Don’t forget the “Great Green Expo” on March 29, 2008 at the Chase Riverfront.
We want everyone to put this one on their calendar!

Clear Channel Delaware announced the first great Green Expo right here in Wilmington. We have some celebrity guests already lined up, some great local and regional musicians will be there, and a ton of “Green”: entrepreneurs, businesses, lecturers, organic clothing, and renewable energy booths… around 130 different green: companies, research groups, activist groups, engineers, car dealerships, educators, students, scientists, builders, architects, homeowners, and much, much more. So if you have a business or cause or Non profit that should be featured at the show, or for that matter, if you’re doing something extraordinarily green that we can showcase, please let us know. Just remember… the world is moving and we need to move along with it. Before we start the show, we need to thank our sponsors… Paul?

Thanks to: – Suntrust Mortgage, CMI Electric, Energy Services Group, Myecoagent.com and Option Insurance Group. Also, Mark Unruh for the great music…. and listen to Scott Birney’s program on WVUD - 91.3 FM on Fridays…Doug... Protect us...

Brooke’s Article: How to Green your Personal Care

So I was gettin ready the other morning, ya know doing the million things we ladies have to do evvvery day before we even get dressed ...shower, shave, lotions, creams, hair, makeup, etc… and I was noticing just how many products I use every single day just to get ready. From shampoo to soap to lotions to face creams, toners, deodorants, hair gels, sprays, nail products… I mean the list just goes on and on.

So I got curious and wondered what the heck is in all these products… and just as you can imagine they’re full of crazy chemicals (that I would only embarrass myself to attempt to pronounce), which made me think that if it’s anything like food... these are probably not all that good for us let alone our mother earth! And I won’t even start on how many of these bottles we’re going through everyday and how many of them are certainly not made from recycled plastic!!!

Anyway, so I decided to do a little research and I discovered that when these chemicals are absorbed, inhaled and ingested, there can be huge health problems associated with them, such as cancer, birth defects, learning disabilities, hormonal dysfunction, and other health problems. The manufacturers aren’t even required to list these chemicals because the “Government” has determined that the amounts in the products are so small that they won’t be harmful, but if you think about how many products we use and the fact that we use them everyday… its alot! So actually, this is a huge problem and should be a concern to any woman who uses cosmetics.

So here is the scoop on these products and some of the harmful chemicals in them:

  • mercury
  • placenta
  • lead acetate
  • petro chemicals
  • pthalates
  • hydroquinone
  • nonparticles
  • parabens

(talk about each of these, what they’re disguised as, what they’re in, and how they can be harmful to you)

So here are some tips on how you can greenify your beautification!!:

look for non aluminum deodorant

use a natural toothpaste

read the labels!

buy from companies that have signed the csc'c compact ( they use certified organic and natural ingredients)

stay away from petroleum products

look for the HCS label to ensure there was no testing on animals

know that just because the product says organic or natural or hypo allergenic doesn’t mean that it is

make sure it has a USDA Organic seal or an Eco-Certified label!

Here are a couple of my favorite green products!:

  • Burts bees
  • crystal deodorant
  • solar powered toothbrush
  • green people toothpaste

Thank you Brooke, and congratulations on your first “very own” segment! Whataya think Paul? Should we keep her?

I absolutely think we should keep her! (or whatever you want for comments)

I’m suddenly thankful for Brooke. Now Paul, I warned you I was going to quiz you. What precisely are you thankful for this year?

I have a short list.

A list of what I am thankful for here at the great Green Home Show:

  1. Friends and family and the time to be with them.
  2. To be living in America at this time with all the advantages and challenges; travel, planes. Plentiful transportation, TV, music, freedom of thought and movement, exploring new science areas in medical, and new genetic discoveries... now I know that some people are not as fortunate as others in this society and a lot oof “ Isms” still exist... and our present economic system has not been as kind to them as it may have been to me and others. However, taking that into account... if we look back and place ourselves back in time, it was immeasurably harder in so many ways back then and for that we should all be thankful...
  3. I'm thankful for the fact that I and others can be useful in preserving the future of our planet. Even if it's a small part, I'm really happy to be working on some of the things that the planet needs to have happen in order to ensure its survival and make it a much more comfortable place for all its inhabitants.
  4. All of the people out there who are setting back thermostats, using less energy, taking public transportation, riding a bike to work, hanging there laundry out to dry, recycling, buying recycled products, buying solar power, using less of everything, thinking green in general every day....
  5. Music, listening to music, good music of all types and playing music being able to play with other musicians and create new sounds. Absolutely thrilled. Come see them at the March 29th Expo...
  6. The people that work with me on the show. I'm very thankful for Doug he does an amazing job at anchoring the show and writing. Not only is he a good friend but he is a dedicated environmentalist who has given a lot of his time to do the show.
  7. For Brooke Chase our producer who has dedicated her time and talent to making sure that the show runs smoothly, giving us a woman's point of view (whatever that may be) and I say that because we need her to express at least one woman's viewpoint and we thank her for that.
  8. And for the marketing and sales executives at Clear Channel and WILM who had the foresight and the dedication to support us in our efforts to create a forum to try to entertain as we further information and action to reduce the effects of our somewhat overzealous society.
  9. Thankful for our listeners for without you we would only be talking to ourselves, and though that amuses us immensely, most of the time it's nice to know there are people out there who are willing to listen to us every week and enjoy the information and the green themes that we research diligently each week. We really appreciate this growing, listening body and hope that we can be helpful, inspirational, and occasionally make you laugh... which of course is what life is all about… enjoying the ride.
  10. I’m thankful that this is a such great time to be alive… what wonderful challenges we have in front of us and of course, there's no other place that I'd rather be in here and now. And if you are listening to me then you are the perfect person to meet, greet, and take on these challenges.

-- so you see there are so many, many things to be thankful for though I’ve only been able to mention a few. I'm sure Doug and Brooke have many more to add, but unfortunately we have so little time in our show to put out green information and news, that I’ll simply say thank you to all.
