Music & Introduction – 3:30

Introduction – Good Morning!!! Welcome to another edition of the Great Green Home Show. We hope everyone is having a great, dry and warm weekend so far. We’d like to thank everyone who’s tuned in today, as well as those of you who are listening online at wilm.com.

As always, our goal is to inform and entertain as we try to give you the latest information available regarding all things “green”. We’ll talk about how you can reduce your carbon footprint, save some energy, and most importantly, save you money...

Today’s show, as always, is about something green... today something green happens to be the greens themselves. By that I mean vegetables... locally grown produce and other locally produced foods. We have a guest today who knows all about growing locally, eating locally, and selling locally.

I’m Doug Hunt and next to me is my co-host, Paul Hughes. Good morning Paul, how was your week? Anything special happen? Anything particularly “green” going on?

Paul: Oh Yeah you there is always something green going on..... as you know the big-ticket these days is a “big green ticket” and of course the big news is the “ Great Green Expo” on March 29 at the Chase Riverfront. We want everyone to put this one on their calendar. We'll probably be talking about it for at least another four months, so I will be brief. We have some celebrity guests lined up already, great local and regional musicians will be there, and a lot of green: entrepreneurs, businesses, education tables, lectures, organic clothing, and renewable energy booths and much more. As things start to develop we will bring you more and more reports on the construction of this exciting and important new event.

And... as to last week's beginning rant I talked about less demand for oil being able to keep gas prices lower... well that didn't last long... did it? Oil prices have gone up again… the price of a barrel oil is close to $100 a barrel and I still see all those cars on the road… and things seem a little bit bleak in the news these last couple of weeks... stock markets down, forclosures are up, Dougs out of Enzyte, and as much as that might be a relief for some of us overall it was not a great week.

Unless of course you look at all the good things that happened in terms of renewable energy. Bluewaterwind continues to negotiate and adjust their price. They're getting a lot of support from many local groups and their bid is still alive in Delaware. They have also started the negotiating process the state of Maryland 150 wind turbines off Ocean City, Maryland. That means there's a proposed 300 large wind turbines off our coast maybe... enough to power close to 300,000 homes in our area. If they do come to an agreement with the state of Delaware, that wind farm could be finished as soon as 2012 or 2014.

Doug: Clear Channel Radio announced the first great Green Expo right here in Delaware. Over 125 green: companies, research groups, activist groups, engineers, car manufacturers, educators, students, scientists, builders, architects, homeowners, cats and dogs living together, total anarchy! Sorry, I went away for a second there. Anyway, you get the point... Think about it... if we'd mentioned green anything in the State of Delaware five years ago we probably could have organized, two pairs of organic cotton underwear, a big wheel for transportation, and a magnifying glass to concentrate the sun for solar power... my how things have changed in just such a short time. The point is, things are moving along and we need to move along with them.

Paul: Congress is working on an energy bill that could change the way our our planet is heating up and becomes polluted. So I urge you to write your congressman, and your Senators as quickly as you can... do not delay on this... write immediately to Castle, Biden, and Carper and urge them to include a well-funded bill for renewable energy sources. This is essential as they may be leaving this environmental provision out this time around and we don't know when they'll get back to it.

So make sure you go to the... www.delaware.gov and go to elected officials, click on the one, and then tell them what you want them to do, they work for you... also, send snail-mail and make phone calls.

You see you really do have the power to change things and it only takes a few seconds. I know personally from having talked to our representatives in Washington. And it only takes 20 letters or more, yes 20 handwritten letters from a group about a topic to get their attention. That's all it takes. So I've already written one and I've called them and you can do the same thing.

All you need to do is request that they do not leave the funding for and research and development of renewable energy sources out of this energy bill... that's it. Yup that’s it so let’s move on and have some fun while we take on this global warming thing.

So come along with us, as we journey through the green landscape every week and try and work with us to make the necessary changes in your diet, your driving habits, your thermostat, your water use, and how you treat the creatures on the planet that we live on. And use technology. Before we can get on with the show, we need to thank our sponsors. Paul?

Thanks to: – Suntrust Mortgage, CMI Electric, Energy Services Group, Myecoagent.com and Option Insurance Group. Also, Mark Unruh for the great music…. and listen to Scott Birney’s program on WVUD - 91.3 FM on Fridays…Doug... Protect us...

OH YES... before we really get going, we have an important announcement, again

The “Great Green Expo” On March 29th 2008 Chase Center on the Riverfront....

So here are some things they need to know about food safety

  1. Only 1% of imported food is inspected. Because the federal government refuses to implement a country of origin labeling program for meat and produce consumers don't have the facts they need to, to avoid low-quality food from overseas
  2. Despite new research that shows that artificial hormones may contribute to a fivefold increase in twin pregnancies for American women and federal governments allows them and dairy products they are banned in Canada andeurope
  3. The US Department of Agriculture organic Seal is the only label for meat, dairy and eggs that is sanctioned by the federal government. To be labeled USDA certified organic product, its producer must meet the organic standards established of and be certified by the USDA.
  4. In grocery stores food that has been irradiated must be labeled as such and include a Radura Symbol... if you do not wish to eat irradiated foods.... Food products bearing this label should probably be avoided as no long-term studies currently exist about the long-term health effects of eating irradiated food. Unfortunately irradiated foods sold in restaurants schools and hospitals as well as processed food containing irradiated ingredients are not required to have the label.
  5. Cage free... is a label that indicates that the birds are raised without cages. However this does not describe any of the other conditions where the birds have been raised so eggs produced by birds raised indoors in overcrowded conditions without access to pasture could still be labeled as cage free.
  6. Seafood my favorite: Avoid imports! Less than 1% of imported seafood is tested for contaminants. Imported Shrimp, in particular, is notoriously contaminated.
  7. Eat fresh seafood: Avoid processed seafood which travels farther, uses more fuel and lacks country of origin labeling
  8. Avoid farm raised Marine finfish, especially salmon. They can threaten wild fish populations and are fed chemicals that can be harmful to consumers.
  9. Choose farm raised mussels and clams, which are often raised sustainably by small-scale operations.
  10. Eat a variety of fish to reduce your exposure to possible seafood contaminants and to relieve pressure on wild populations.

Okay, so some of your best choices: farm raised catfish, farm raised clams muscles and oysters, caviar for those will debut also farm raised, farm raised arctic char, long line Pacific cod, Canadian snow crab, crayfish US farmed, Atlantic croaker and herring, Pacific halibut, wild Alaskan salmon, farm raised bay scallops, US farm raised her, wild striped bass, albacore tuna and skipjack tuna..... just to name us few rated by food and water watch.org.
