On Location w/ Cleatus (Doug & Paul) - 2:45 Nutria Attacks!!!

"This week's On Location segment has us in Maryland where rodents of unusual size are causing an environmental uproar. To bring you more on this story we go to Cleatus T. Beaumont, our Forensic Roadkill Pathologist who's on location in Maryland. Professor?";

"What the heck are you doin'?! Look at the size of that one! Get away from me!!";

"Professor? Are you there? Are you ok Professor?";

"I'm sorry Doug. I'm bein' attacked by these things . good golly, this one is bigger'n my Hound dog! I'm at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Dorchester County where these enormous rodents called Nutria are destroyin' thousands of acres of marshland. Formally named Myocaster Coypus, these critters look like a cross between a muskrat, a beaver and a plain old rat and they can grow to 20 pounds and 2 feet in length. They reproduce quickly and have litters of as many as 13 offspring. And because they have no natural predators here, they're multiplyin' unchecked. They feed on crops and marshland vegetation and are doing one spectacular job of making a genuine nuisance of themselves. Wow it looks like a herd of Buffalo rats.

"Professor, are these things native to Maryland?";

"No, they're from South America and were originally introduced to the United States in 1899 for the purpose of fur farmin'. Some escaped and others were released by farmers, and now the wild Nutria population is estimated to be 50 - 75,000 in Blackwater alone.";

"Professor, how exactly do these things destroy wetlands?";

"Doug they eat the marshland vegetation right down to what's called the "root mat";, meanin' the plant is destroyed and cannot be regrown. They have big, orange, beaver like teeth and powerful forefeet and are able to devour these plants unlike any native wildlife. Hey! What the heck?!! Stop it! My gosh, he got one of my gloves! Come back here you big !!!";

Professor, what is the impact of losing marshland?

So far these critters have destroyed about 7000 acres of marshland down here and damaged another 50 or so percent of the remainin' marshland. There are many natural species here, such as waterfowl, wadin' birds and muskrats that need the marshland to survive and their numbers are dwindlin'.

So what are we doing to fix the problem professor?

Well Doug . Hold on a second . Aaaw shoot!!! That sucker just ate my dog!!! That's gonna take two days and it's gonna hurt!!! Good lord, you could make a horror film here without any special effects!!! I'm sorry.

It's ok professor, it sounds like you have your hands full.

Anyway, the State of Maryland has a team of federal, state and private agencies and organizations workin' on the problem. They've trapped a crapload of these varmants so far, but are barely makin' a dent. Some locals have even taken to eatin' these things. The favored recipe involves a crock-pot and barbecue spices. Personally, I'm partial to marinatin' ‘em in a little creamy garlic salad dressin' overnight and then grillin' ‘em to about medium rare. Although once I used ..

Thank you professor. For more information on Nutria, you can do an internet search on Nutria Maryland. We'll be right back after this commercial break. Don't go away.
