Overall Segment #2 – 12:00

The Greens (Go to Vegas) – 3:30 Sponsored by Energy Services Group

As you know, our overzealous friends, the Green Family (Ben & Doris, along with their kids Toby and Sally) are always mindful of the cumulative effect they have on our planet and have made it their quest to save energy at every opportunity. This week, the family is in Las Vegas on a family vacation. Let’s check in on them and see how they’re doing.

Ben: OK kids! It’s time to go on our urban-desert eco trip and see what a real desert town looks like. I want to see how nature survives on little or no water. I’ve already seen how the people here survive with no water. They drink a lot of something called Bombay Sapphire. I’m not sure what it is, but it appears to replace water and they all seemed quite happy with it.

Toby: Gee whiz Dad, we are sooooo ready. We have our biodegradable water bottles and our spun nylon recycled tote bags for collecting trash along the way. I’m even wearing my new re-tread sandals.

Sally: Woo Hoo! I’m ready to collect a record number of bottles and cans today Dad. I was so excited last night, I couldn’t sleep. I went downstairs and saw these women hanging around on the street corners, who must have been poor, because they were hardly wearing anything. I asked our doorman what they were doing and he said they hang around the corners almost all night and pick up the lowest of the low of Las Vegas “trash”. I am soooo inspired! If they can do it, we sure can too! Maybe I’ll put on my green cheerleading outfit and put on a little “pep rally” for them tonight.

Doris: Yeah, I don’t think we’re talking about the same kind of “trash” here sweetie. (under her breath) Oh my… I may have the dimmest children on the face of the planet. Oh no… am I out of scotch already? I know I don’t need any water. Just the Glenlivet and a pack o’ Luckys.

Toby: Dad, Mom’s mumbling again… something about being lucky. I think she’s excited about eco-desert clean-up trek too!

Ben: Really? Are you sure you’re up to the trip honey? You know it can get really hot out there. You need a sun block of at least SPF 30, light, loose clothing (re-cycled, of course) and lots and lots of fluids… honey? Are you ok? You don’t look so good.

Doris (under her breath): Me? You haven’t looked good since our honeymoon. At least I have the courtesy to put on the “beer goggles” now and again.

Sally: Dad’s right Mom… you don’t look good. Maybe you should stay in bed today.

Doris: Well I am feeling a little under the weather today and I would hate to slow you down when I know you’re trying to set a new bottle and can record today. Toby: That’s really thoughtful of you Mom! Maybe you should lie down. I mean, you did give out 12 hundred “Reduce Your Carbon Footprint” flyers last nite. You must be exhausted!

Doris (mumbling again): More like 12, but who’s countin’? The other 1188 went in the recycled paper bin. Hey! Don’t judge me! At least they got to the re-cycled paper bin!

Ben: Aw, come on honey! You know it won’t be the same without you. We need all hands on deck if we’re going to make any kind of impact out there. Besides, a little dry heat will do you good. And don’t forget… there’s that free lunch buffet at the “Organic Tofu Sprout and Black Bean Casino”.

Doris (sarcastically, under her breath again): Yum, yum. Now I’m gonna have sneak away when we get to the rest stop and hitch a ride back to the MGM Grand so I can see that cutie Wayne Newton or Don Ho or Don Rickles or Don somebody. Or maybe I can just fall into the Grand Canyon. That’s gotta be a good way to go! Right?

Today’s Opinion – (Doug) – 2:00 Sponsored by: Option Insurance Group

More and more people are looking at the world in a different light these days. It seems that just a few years ago, we were arguing over whether or not global warming was actually happening. Now it seems that the argument is over how bad it is and what’s the best way to slow or stop it. Well, I can’t answer the former… I don’t think anyone can tell us exactly how bad it is. But I don’t think there’s too much debate over whether or not it needs to be addressed… it does. As far as strategies for slowing the progress of global warming, I have the perfect solution… do something… anything. But start small and make it habit. Replace your incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, re-cycle, turn off your computer at night, or throw a dry towel in the clothes dryer when you’re doing laundry. Buy energy star rated appliances, keep your furnace and AC filters clean, don’t run the hot water if you don’t need to or take reusable grocery bags with you when you shop.

I know we talk about installing solar power on the roof and re-doing the insulation in your home and buying hybrid cars and a dozen other things that cost money… in some cases significant money, with long pay-back periods. I’m not saying you shouldn’t do those things… you should. What I am saying is that there are dozens of small things… things that cost little or nothing up front, that you can do right now… today. In most cases, these same things will actually save you some money immediately.

So next time you think about the planet earth and say to yourself, “what can I do”, the answer is this:

A)Choose 1 small thing that you can do today. Tape a note on the bathroom mirror or inside the fridge to remind yourself. Hell, staple a note to your forehead… I don’t care, whatever works for you. As long as it helps you to remember to do your one small thing every day. B)Make it a habit over the next few weeks. Do it until you won’t ever forget to do it again. C)Once small thing number 1 is habit, find small thing number 2 and repeat.

If you do this, two things are guaranteed to happen… you’ll feel better and the world will be a little better off.

Listener Letters & E-mail (Paul & Doug) – 6:30 Sponsored by CMI Electric

Check the Radio Show Segments on GREENandSAVE.com for the complete ANSWERS!

It’s time for Listener Letters. What do we have Doug?

1. Our first letter is from Mandy Scott of Wallingford, PA. Mandy wants to know: “What is the very first step I should take if I want to reduce my carbon footprint?”

Paul to answer

2. Our next question comes from John Caahktoasten from Viola, DE. John wants to know: “I live on 7 acres, and my property is about a category 4 or 5 for wind. How do I determine if I should be doing solar first or wind first? Obviously, I want to do whatever will give me the quickest payback. Who can tell me what I need to know?” (Paul to answer)
