The Greens go on an Eco Vacation to Rehoboth Beach Part Deux

Last week:

Ben Green and his wife Doris along with their children Toby & Sally were preparing and packing for their surprise eco-vacation. While Ben and the kids counted and packed every recyclable item and then checked and re-checked the list, Doris was digging a hole in the back yard trying to find some of the “recreational” items she had squirreled away. Items, we found out last week, that Dad had already removed from their stash location and hidden in the car in order to lure Doris to Nashville, which was the surprise eco-location. As we join our “Ever-green” family, we find them by the side of the road, where their car has just broken down, somewhere just outside of Nashville

Ben: Okay kids, well I guess you better check and see what was wrong with the car. I know we went over everything. All the items that we needed to bring, we checked and rechecked. I guess we forgot to do the checklist on the car. Toby, please remind me that I need to make a check-list of all the check-lists we need before we travel.

Toby: You’re right Dad. We checked everything we were bringing, but we forgot to do the car check-list. And we were so busy loading all that equipment and trash bags and biodegradable products for the trip, I think we forgot to put fuel in the car.

Ben: Well, I guess in all that commotion, ya know, stuffing your mom into the back of the car and all that duct tape we had to use to get her to stay in there, we forgot to put the BIO-Diesal in the car. Well, we'll just have to have a try and catch a ride to get fuel... HEY! Look at this bus coming our way. Hey, it's slowing down! And it's got it's got Willie Nelson painted on the side! Well Well, ...what a stroke of luck! Maybe we can get a ride to the gas station… I mean the Bio diesel station, with these guys

Willie: (singing) “…on the road again, I just can’t wait to get on the road again”, hey there friends… looks like you got a spot of trouble… anything we can do to help?

Ben: Why yes Mr. Nelson. We’ve run out of gas… I mean bio-diesel and well I was wondering if you could possibly give us a ride to a gas station where we can get some more fuel…

Willie: Well heck! Climb aboard partner! My bus runs on diesel also. I think there’s a bio-diesel station about, oh, 10 or 15 minutes down the road. Grab your kin and climb aboard. We’re just sittin’ back and playin’ a little bit of music here and enjoyin’ the sights of the road as they pass our windows. Oh yeah, don't mind the smoke. We just had a little accident with the stove. I was tryin’ to dry some organic oregano for my Chillie Willie spaghetti sauce and well we left it in just a bit too long. Come on in!

Ben: Okay family, lets get on board. Mr. Nelson's been kind enough to give us a ride, so weave your way through the smoke and find yourself a seat. Thanks so much Willie. Wow, that must be some kind of spaghetti sauce.

Doris: Suddenly I'm really hungry. You know this is actually turning out to be pretty cool trip so far. I mean, here we are in Willie’s bus, although I can't see anybody through this darn smoke, but I'm starting to feel much better. Hi… I’m Doris… do you mind if I sit here? Oh my goodness, you’re Bonnie Raitt. Holy crap!!! What are you doing on the bus, Bonnie?.

Bonnie: Well as you probably know my tour bus runs on biodiesel just like Willie’s and I was lookin’ for ways to decrease my consumption and and lessen my carbon footprint, so I decided to buspool with Willie. And then we started playing together so we just combined our tours and both of us cut our carbon footprint nearly in half....... of course, now I have no idea where I am or what town we are playing in next, but Willie knows, don't you Willie?

Willie: Sure darlin’, sure… (whispering away from Bonnie) All I know is we’ve been playing Nashville now for about three weeks now ‘cause we can’t figure out how to get to the next stop on the tour. So we just pull in every once in a while and play at some bar and then we ask directions when we head back out, but that doesn’t seem to be workin’ too well. Heck, we may never leave Nashville, but as long as we get to play, we’re happy. Maybe we’ll try getting’ directions again when we stop for your biodiesel.

Ben: Let me see here… think I can find a seat over here. It's kind of dim but I think I can… Oh! Excuse me… is it alright if I sit next to you

Dave Mathews: No man, its cool, no worries. I was under the table and dreaming, but I'm up now.

Toby: Hey dad, that's Dave Matthews. Did you know his tours are carbon neutral? He and his band made a deal with a carbon neutral company to offset all of his energy usage by planting trees and by buying power from sustainable energy sources. I think his t-shirts are even made from recyclable cloth.

Ben: You know other than feeling a little lightheaded. I certainly am having a good time here and I can't think of a greener crowd for us to be driving with. I see Bono, Sting Perry Farrell, Neil Young, and Mark Unruh...Hey Mark......

Sally: Hey Mr. Nelson… this is a really cool bus and there's some really cool people on it. You know, we’re on our eco-vacation and I don't think it was just a coincidence we ran into you. By the way where are we going to get bio diesel for our vehicles?

Willie: Well, you know little Sally, I have my own line of bio diesel. It's called the “Bio-Willie” and it's in a lot of gas stations here in the South… I can’t find any of ‘em, but my dealer… I mean, my manager, tells me they’re out there.

Toby: Daaaaaaaaaaaad! Mom's got her head in the oven again!

Doris: Yeah, Yeah, I hear you. Don't worry kids! I’m not trying to kill myself this time, I swear! I'm just checking to see if this is a self-cleaning oven and if it isn't, I’m going to have to scrape the resin… I mean residue off the sides… Ya know… to get it clean…

Willie: Hey, don't worry about that little lady. That’s Cheryl's job. Hey, ya know… I haven’t seen Cheryl for a while. Has anybody seen Cheryl? Did we lose Cheryl again?

Join us next week, when the Greens try Willie’s cream of mushroom soup.

Present Technology...about 9 to 10 k for conversion...

2. Our next letter is from Paula Weiner from Piscataway, NJ (listening online from Jersey):

I was listening to your show on Eco-vacations. Please define Eco-vacation. I’m not sure I get it.

We at the GGHS define an eco-vacation or eco-travel as “Any travel that requires little or no energy, and / or where the carbon created by that travel is offset “.

Thanks to CMI Electric for sponsoring this weeks Listener Letters. Remember, we’ll answer your questions too.
