Overall Segment #1 – 9:00

Music & Introduction (Doug) – 3:30

Introduction – Good morning Delmarva and welcome to the Great GREEN HOME SHOW. I hope everyone has had a good weekend so far. We’d like to thank everyone for tuning in to the show… today’s show is full of great local music and green musical info.... We’ll be discussing the influence of music and musicians in spotlighting green issues and driving environmental change over the years. We’ll have some fun traveling back in time to visit some of the world’s most famous musicians and let them tell us about their concerns and messages for us to consider…

As always, we’ll try to entertain you, while showing how you can reduce your carbon footprint, save some energy and even - perhaps - save you a little money... We have “The Greens” a brief appearance of some of our “Great & Strange Moments in History” characters, helpful tips and “green” news items, both local and global.

I’m Doug Hunt, and next to me is my co-host, Paul Hughes. Good morning Paul, how was your week? Anything special happen? Anything particularly Green going on?

Paul – some weeks I run into green stuff and some weeks it runs over me.....lets see uh ...Oh yes, more on the completely misguided diversion of our Grain food stocks ( mostly corn and soy ) for the fueling of our voracious appetite of fossil fuels...I have learned that among other things we have talked about that using ethanol can reduce your fuel economy by as much as 30% For E85 and other blends....... So in essence, you may be using ethanol to fuel your car but you are going to have to use more of it to get where you are going...add in the subsidized cost, (Which you the tax payer is paying ), and the lost of food stocks and you have a real waste of energy and resources...and the same savings can be achieved by a very small increase in our café standards.....or carpooling and conservation by you the consumer.....

And again, I’m recommending that everybody go see the movie “Crude Awakening” or take your computers out and dial up (Peak oil) and read some of the articles and then listen to our show because we will be talking about what we need to do in order to help our country and the world make a safe and quick changeover to alternative fuels so that we can bridge, without too much economic trouble, into a hydrogen economy or the next economy that's carbon free and renewable.

As I suggested last week, Delmarva Power customers take charge of their own energy future by writing into Delmarva... www.delmarva.com... and for the over 500,000 customers the # is( 1 800 375 7117 ) start sending e-mails to public relations to let them know how you feel about wind power and the necessity for it for so many reasons, even if now it costs a little bit more. Tell them that you would be more than happy to pay the 11 dollars or so of add on costs and you would like them to negotiate a contract as soon as possible ....Remember there is nothing we can’t do if we do it now and we do it together. Recycle, conserve, and share…

Doug: And use technology. Our guest this week is Mark Unruh, the man responsible for all of our music here on the GGHS. An amazing musician and songwriter, Mark is with us to play a little and talk about music and change. That said, lets get on with the show. But first, we need to thank our sponsors. Paul?

Thanks to: – Suntrust Mortgage, CMI Electric, Energy Services Group, Myecoagent.com and Option Insurance Group. Also, Mark Unruh for the great music…. and listen to Scott Birney’s program on WVUD - 91.3 FM on Fridays ...we will be on as guests some day soon… when hell freezes over! Doug... Protect us...

Todays topic: Top Unknown Musical Environmentalists/ Activists of all Time – 5:00 Sponsored by: Suntrust Mortgage of Christiana

The List:

  1. ZOG: Caveman who discovered passive solar technology and crusaded endlessly with his caveman rock group, literally they used rocks, They were the first concussion percussion group... The Neanderthals Now known as the “Neanderthaws” after being found intact in a block of Antarctic Ice. The group was summarily revived and are now touring with Rat Dog but apparently they have become real big Millie Vanille fans due to late night video reruns....and their tour has been cancelled...they do however have a sitcom on ABC
  2. Friar Thomas Crumwell 1250 to 1325 Ad: Italian monk who espoused the practice of composting at the monastery but because of his vow of silence was inspired to write his great medieval passion play “The Poop and the Pasture” an inspiring and haunting piece about recycling waste and fertilizing the gardens of the Monestary. Though persecuted for his beliefs Friar Crumwell never stopped believing, inspiring the Journey song “Don’t Stop Believing”.
  3. The Inquisition: Hector De Reclamier and poor Peasant Leader who was accused of the crime of crimes of enlightenment and individual thinking. Hector had written a manifesto which proposed on both a physical and metaphysical level increasing the amount of light and we let into our homes and into our lives. His theory was set to music by an early hard rock quartet known as the Stinkuisition. The music was raucous, satirical and sarcastic just exactly what the Inquisition was looking for. Hector and the band escaped on an early cruiseship which was headed for the island of Elba near the French coast. They lived their until the French defeated the Spanish and converted Elba to a prison island, complete with croissant & Grey Poupon.
  4. Revolutionary war...Paul Revere was misunderstood... everyone thinks he said “the British are coming" when what he really said was “the Big Fish are Running”..... he was warning of the effects of dumping all that tea in the bay. Not only an early environmentalist, Paul Revere was one heck of a spoons player. Revere remained misunderstood, he had a lisp and stuttered terribly, but like some of his contemporaries his legacy was tied a recent revival by his great, great, great, grandson Paul of Paul Revere and the Raiders. Again a much misunderstood environmental group. There 1965 Hit “HUNGRY” was totally misinterpreted and digested as pop drivel when really it was a musical bellwether for action towards world hunger and topsoil recovery.
  5. John and Samuel Adams although politicians were the modern precursors of The male Duet like Sam and Dave, The Blues Brothers, the Everly Brothers, and Frank and Dino. They actually had a DC hit which climbed to number 3 on the Billboard colonial charts in the late 1700’s It was a ballad describing the unsightly sprawl and development in the metro DC area. Of course it was maligned and buried by a secret development group who of course now own all of the parking lots in Washington, DC.
  6. Although Charlie Chaplain was a silent film star no one can forget what a great environmentalist and advocate against world hunger...although he sang quite well and wrote songs about recycling and some Hobo tunes he was never recorded, apparently he sounded like a train coming to a halt on a chalk board. This is where the phrase “choo-choo Charlie” actually originated. Fortunately for us (the listening public) Charlie had a long and profitable career in silent movies
  7. And the strangest and possibly the most bizarre of all environmental musicians was the late and great Marcel Marceau. As we all know, sadly Marcell passed quietly this week and we mourn his passing…A Moment of silence please… It is a little known fact that Marcel wrote many operas. The Mute cat of Marseille, Climbing the Silent Ladder, The Invisible Wall of Paris, and many other esoteric existential pieces which will unfortunately, never be heard as they were written in Mime. His passing, however, will not go unnoticed but his art unfortunately will forever be silenced.
