On Location with Cletus - 5:00 Sponsored by: Energy Services Group

Professor Cletus T. Beaumont is on the road today, test driving a new Bio-diesel car. And as usual, he’s also out in search of ways to protect our local wildlife from highway harm. However, as you know, if a critter is accidentally hit... well, waste not, want not.

Doug: Professor, are you there? Prof: Well hello! Is that you Dougie-boy?

Doug: Yes Professor, it’s me. I’m here in the studio, and we were wondering how you are and where you are? Prof: Well it’s nice of you to check in my friend. I’ve been out here since last night checking on road safety for these animals. As you know, I am one of the world’s foremost authorities on animal highway and roadside fatalities. And I believe we can do better.

Doug: Better?!!! Professor, you should be ashamed!!! Prof: No, no, no… not more road kill, Dougmeister! Actually I was thinking less road kill. What you probably don’t know about most roadside varmint fatalities is that if left on the side of the road too long, say a couple of hot days or sometimes just overnight, they may… I say may… not be such good eatin’... so ya see, we’re wastin’ a lot of poor animals for nothin’. You know, there are1.5 million roadside deer fatalities a year in the US. Yes you heard right… 1.5 million, just deer alone. Now not only is that a waste of good deer meat, but your car gets all smashed up and you could get seriously hurt.

Doug: Well that’s great professor, but what exactly are you doing? How’s that bio-diesel car driving? Aren’t you using vegetable oil to power it? Prof: Alright… well... uh... we’ll get to that in a minute, but right now I’m puttin’ chalk lines around some unfortunate animal vehicular victims.....

Doug: Chalk lines? Why on earth are you putting chalk lines around roadkill? (mumbles under breath “This I gotta hear!”) Prof: Well Doug, in the interest of conservation and a good possum stew I have learned one treeeemendous tip for ensurin’ fresh Roadkill Stew from my good friend Ruppert Rosseti from none other than Cecil County, MD... yes its true...

Doug: And what’s that Professor? Prof: It’s actually genious! Your gonna love this!!! The day before you’re gonna cook up a big ol’ batch o’ the Cajun Critter Stew, you go out’n put a chalk line around all the unfortunate varmint victims you can find. Then the next day, you head back out to the roads and any victims that don’t have chalk lines round ‘em, well, they’re the fresh ones, go ahead and stew away!...

Doug : Professor, can you tell us about the car… the bio-diesel car? Prof: Oh yeah right, I nearly forgot… This is a great car! It runs on regular diesel, bio-diesel and with a slight adjustment to the carburetor, you can run on vegetable oil, deep fryer oil and even Canola oil, although I still ain’t sure where that canola comes from. In fact, I’m runnin’ on the used Buffalo Wing oil from your last soiree!!! Anyway, this car smells like a rolling barbeque and every time I stop, some hungry local bangs on my window and asks for a bucket chicken and a side o’ mashed taters, not mention the hounds that’re constantly chasin’ me… one minor side effect of the bio-diesel. You know, I’m workin’ on a deep fryer attachment that’ll allow you to pull over on the side of the road, add your ingredients and start cookin’ up the...

Doug: Professor... please… for the love of Mike… what about the car? Prof: Oh yeah, well these new diesels are great....the sulfur content in the regular fuel has been reduced along with other harmful emissions,....new bio-diesel blends burn much cleaner and reduce greenhouse gases even further, your mileage is way up there, in fact, some get as high as 50 to 60 miles per gallon....oh yeah and the engines last a lot longer than gas engines and they need less maintenance, they drive real good and with the advances in engine design they are quite peppy,....but the only problem is that I keep havin’ to stop and eat... you get hungry when your car smells like a Super-sized order of Mickie DEEs Fries .. You should see the size of the ketchup bottle I have to carry around... and you know…

Doug: Excuse me Professor, but what about animal fatality prevention? Prof: Oh yes, there are some great new devices to warn animals you are comin’ down the road... most are units that emit a high pitch, auditory signal, which attach to your car... they range from about $29 to $69 dollars and are easy to install...... highway departments all over the USA have started using infrared motion detectors to activate warning signs for drivers...they get tripped when an animal nears a highway or roadside and then that activates a flashing roadside signal up ahead for the oncoming motorists... In fact, they even have a reverse system which alerts the animals that you’re comin’ (how they do that, I’m not sure). But you know, there’re other things you can do to reduce our animal accidents: drive slower, don’t out-drive your headlights, plan your route around known deer areas, lower speed limits in dense rural areas, and oh yeah... stop drinking like a nineteen year old submarine sailor on leave before you get in your car! And stay off the damn phone when you’re drivin’, also look for shiny beady eyes on the side of the road at night...

Doug: Thank you Professor. Anything else you’d like to impart to us about the car? Prof: Well yes Doug, there is more…ya see… I was test drivin’ the car when a pack o’ wild Chipmunks ran out into the road and bombarded my car with acorns, and as a result, I was thrown into a short period of deep, French, existential dilemma… and in this contemplative fog-filled moment, I kinda swerved and well… I hit a another car... a Prius in fact… we kinda like mated the 2 cars, and while we’s waitin’ for the tow truck and the po-leese... we been talkin’ ‘bout developin’ a hybrid diesel which runs on animal waste. Ya see, there’s a lot o’ methane in animal doodoo... so Ford can make an “Ex-turd-ition”, or a Cadillac “Poop DeVille”, or a Chevy “Malipoo” or a Honda “Excrement” or a Toyota “Crapolla”…

Doug : I’m sorry I asked... Thank you Professor…
