Overall Segment #1 – 9:00

Music & Introduction (Doug) – 3:30

Introduction – Good morning Delmarva and welcome to the Great GREEN HOME SHOW. I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far. We’d like to thank you for tuning in, today.

As always, we’ll try to educate and entertain you, while talking about how you can reduce your carbon footprint, save some energy and even - perhaps - save you a little money... We have our recurring characters, helpful tips and “green” news items, both local and global.

I’m Doug Hunt, and next to me is my co-host, Paul Hughes. Good morning Paul, how was your week? Anything special happen? Anything particularly Green going on?

Paul – Nope...sorry nothing happened at all... oh, well, maybe just the best Greenfest ever... what did you see? Thousands of people! It took 20 minutes to get in... it went quickly though…

For those who have no idea what we’re referring to… Paul and I (with the wife in tow) went to Washington D.C. on Saturday to the Greenfest at the D.C. Convention Center and wow!... was that ever impressive! Over 300 booths and presenters, 2 stages, thousands of people listening to health, and lifestyle speakers… there were booths for fair trade food, clothing and shelter and recycled products of every kind, social organizations, green investment companies, local organic produce…Watershed restoration, organic health and beauty care, Energy Star products, small-group eco-adventures, natural and organic food producers, environmental colleges…

There was a whole host of media and green media partners, everything from E-magazine to free speech TV, Link TV, Ms. Magazine, natural health, natural home…Corporate social responsibility booths, community action groups (everything from Earth Justice to Oceana to Sierra Club to trees for the future), conservation and recycling initiatives…There was a whole aisle of Eco-art, eco-fashion… there were probably 30 booths on eco-fashion, recycled clothes, fair trade manufacturing, organic cotton apparel, everything…

Another 10 booths on eco-travel… everything from tropical vacations to environmentally friendly auto clubs to eco-conscious boutique hotels…Maybe 25 booths for fair trade everything… from fair trade teas to fair trade phone services, fair trade jewelry, fair trade pottery… Upwards of 15 booths on green building… everything from the U.S. Building Council to the sustainable design group to Peabody architects to the guys who make the brick for your house right from the soil on your lot…

Green careers and education took like another 15 booths… I’m talking about universities, the national environment education foundation, Institute for humane education… and did you know you can get a bachelors of science in sustainable energy from the Maharashtra University? I did not, at least not until Saturday. And then there was the great green kids zone which was a lot of fun for all the youngsters. And green media… there were probably 50 booths for the green media and its players…Natural health, enviro-friendly cleansers, natural home and garden, new green businesses, organic beer and wine (Doug’s favorite), organic food and agriculture, renewable energy, socially responsible investing…

Ok… I don’t want to beat it to death, but this thing was huge!!! Hundreds of exhibitors, tens of thousands of people… I’m going to go out on a limb here and say the Green Movement is here to stay. This expo demonstrated the opportunities available to anyone who wants to green their existing business, start a green business, or just plain switch careers and go to work for somebody who's got a green business… but also showed me that there are an awful lot of folks out there who are trying to improve the planet and the lives of anyone who’s interested in doing so. It’s already made an impact on my life… one week later I’m using products I found at the expo that I didn’t even know existed before. And in most cases, these things don’t cost any more than the product it replaced and it’s better for me and for the planet. It certainly showed us the wave of the future and the excitement and hopefulness in the air was quite exhilarating.

The Great GREEN HOME SHOW will try to fetter out the truth on all of these new and emerging technologies and so-called answers to our present energy and pollution problems. We’ll do our best to research all angles,.... try to stay away from any political influences and get to the roots of the problem as early as possible so our listeners can become informed and make their own decisions based upon information as close to the truth as we can get it. And don’t forget… recycle, conserve, and share…And use technology. We’re going to continue to discuss the greenfest, but first, we need to thank our sponsors. Paul?

Todays Topic: Cool Things From the Expo - 5:00 Sponsored by: Suntrust Mortgage of Christiana

The List: Top ten cool things we found at the Expo:

1. The absolute amazing amount of different entrepreneurs who are putting out quality products while respecting sustainability, bio-organics and renewable energy.

2. I liked all of the products that you could buy that donated a certain amount of money towards a specific cause, which would normally be affected by comparable products that were not being manufactured in a fair trade or sustainable way.

3. The amazing amount of opportunities that are created from the existing efforts of the green entrepreneurs that we ran into there. It seems as if every time someone gets an idea or puts out a product, two or three more related products are created.

4. The excitement that builds as the show went on, and the amazing amount of respect that the participants and the presenters had for each other that was the bloodshed fellow at shown in the conversations and interactions almost everywhere we were. There was a huge excitement about what was possible and what people were doing.

5. For me one of the great discoveries was an organization that probably a lot of people know about and for some reason slipped by me and that is: EarthJustice. Without going into too much detail, this is a great organization which is a nonprofit environmental law firm which represents hundreds of community groups and organizations free of charge in cases that protect our air, water, land, and wildlife. And their docket of cases shows a strong commitment to taking on special interests in protecting the environment . This highlighted just one of the groups that I was totally unaware of there were many many more.

6. How soft bamboo towels were and bamboo robes. It was amazing to see the quality of products that were made from organic cotton's and from fibers that were taken from bamboo and other natural product sources.

7. Being challenged to do more. I know we do a lot for the environment and we do our best, but going to this greenfest seemed to challenge me in a very welcoming and inviting way......, once you take a look at what they’re doing, you will want to do it too. And you will end you will be happier for many reasons.

8. The realization that the people with the real power in this country are the consumers and: the way they wield their power is how they spend their dollar, and who they spend their dollar with, and who they tell that they will not spend their dollar with.

9. The amazing amount of networking that was going on. Everywhere I looked everyone I talked to was trading product information and ideas, new information,

10. and my personal favorite www.saviorworld.com where you buy one product and you save one acre of rainforest for one year and I'll be shopping there for quite a while.

Doug? Personal favorites?

I’m a big fan of functionality. You know, jewelry is ok, but I like stuff I’m going to need anyway. So my favorites were those things that were functional, like cleansers and lighting and food and clothes, as far as the consumer goods are concerned… and you know I bought a pound of organic, fair trade coffee and it’s awesome. As for the rest, I was amazed by the whole atmosphere and shear numbers of people who are interested in doing the right thing.

It was a really really really really really really large show and we hope to give you more information and bring in more guests as time goes by and hopefully you to will change the way you look at consuming, conserving, and how you set your footprint on the planet everyday.
