Overall Segment #1 – 9:00

Music & Introduction – 4:30

Good Morning!!! Welcome to another edition of the Great Home Show. Get ready to be “wow”ed by more information on how you can be kinder and gentler to both your wallet and the planet. We’ve got a great show today that will include all of the usual segments, where we’ll give you some money and energy saving tips… and today we’ll also be talking about finance… interest rates, refinancing, energy efficient mortgages and all kinds of good stuff.

As always, we want to express how lucky we feel to be in a position where we can bring you this information every week and we will continue to put it out there as long as you still want to hear it… and from the response we’re getting so far, I think we’ll be here for a while.

I’m Doug Hunt and next to me is my co-host, Paul Hughes. What’s the green happs?

Paul: Well, let’s see. We’re talking about “green finance” this week and we might as well jump right out and announce the 6th annual Sustainable Business SB 20 List of the world’s top sustainable stocks. To be on the list, companies must be strong on both the sustainable and financial sides. SB indicates that this is not a "buy" list, but because the companies are strong financially, their stock may well be worth be buying at some point, based on stock market positioning. SB strives to choose companies of various sizes, industries and parts of the world, but the list doesn't constitute a diversified portfolio. It is simply a list of innovative, model companies that have the potential to greatly impact the ultimate goal of a sustainable society.

SB20 Criteria: The judges decide on the 20 companies that make the list based on the following Sustainability and Financial criteria: Sustainability Criteria: The most exciting companies in terms of how they are conducting their business, or in the technologies they are advancing that solve environmental or social problems. In particular, they have a very strong GREEN story, with the ability to have widespread influence. Financial Criteria: A company has a stock price over $1, is selling products and is profitable, or close to it.
The Judges: This year, Sustainable Business did the SB20 in partnership with KLD Research & Analytics, a pioneer and market leader in sustainable investing research. KLD provided the judges with a universe of about 60 companies that met their criteria, and served as a judge in helping to select the final 20 companies.
SB’s judges are some of the most respected environmental/ social analysts in the world:
Andrew Brengle, Senior Research Analyst, KLD Research & Analytics
Rafael Coven, Managing Partner, Cleantech Indices LLC
Matt Patsky, Managing Director, Winslow Green Growth Fund
Patrick McVeigh, President, Reynders, McVeigh Capital Management
Max Deml, Editor & Publisher, Oeko Invest Publishing Ltd
Ton Rennen, Senior Sustainability Analyst, Triodos Bank NV

And so, the SB Top 20 are (drumroll, please):

Things you can do to help restore the environment

Here are some simple ways in which you can help restore the health of your neighborhood and the planet. We'll start out with a pretty simple example, one that helps to restore the beaches, one of the places that we all love the most.

As you know our beaches are in a little bit of trouble, both from pollution and global warming. There’s a ton of garbage in the ocean and there's a lot of junk on our beaches. Now we have a lot of critters who live in the Ocean that are affected by the pollution, and of course we can't live without our oceans. Ultimately, we get most of our air, moisture, and even weather from them. So what can one person do?

Well you’ve probably heard this before but one person can't save the whole ocean, but any one person can save a part of it, and if everybody follows that example, then the whole ocean can be saved. But someone has to start. So what can you do, you ask? Well, let's look at simple things that you can do to make our water less polluted and help save our beaches. Don't throw any kind of litter on the beach. Always take a bag with you, and whatever you take onto the beach with you comes off with you… and that includes cigarette butts for you smokers... in fact, when you go to the beach make sure you take a large trash bag and fill it with other people's trash as well as your own. Then, simply dispose of it properly in one of the beach trash receptacles. If you can’t find one, properly dispose of it off the beach or at home.

If you have or find any bottles or aluminum cans on the beach, make sure they get recycled.

If you go out fishing, never, never, never throw fishing line in the water. Birds and sea creatures can get tangled in it and die. They also sometimes mistake little bits of plastic for food and choke on them. Most of the plastic is thrown from boats, but some of it comes from beaches or overflowing garbage cans nearby. So it's important to pick everything up that you see. It's good to scan the beach for litter on your way in and then pick a different route on the way out and scan that for litter all so.

You know, a lot of coastal towns (like Bethany, Rehoboth, Ocean City MD, Ocean City NJ) have annual or in some cases monthly “cleanup days” where people show up and work for three or four hours, clean up the beaches, and in the process, save the lives of many animals, and help bring the beaches back to their natural beauty. Now all this sounds simple and is mostly for people who go to the beach a few times a year… but if we can just get one person to start, others will follow. So let’s see if we can make it one of our listeners. Bring your bags and plan a little extra space for those that haven't caught on yet. When they see you do it with a smile, then they just might catch on and help you out.
