Music & Introduction (Doug) – 3:30

Introduction – Good Morning and welcome to the Holiday edition of The Great Green Home Show. We hope you’re warm and happy and ready for some Holiday cheer. We’d like to thank all of our listeners as we complete our 31st show, because by listening to the show and making it more popular, you, our listeners, have been, in large part, responsible for the creation of the first ever Great Green Expo on March 29, 2008 at the Chase Riverfront Convention Center. So without even getting up out of your chair on Sundays and just by turning the radio dial to 1450AM or going to WILM.com, you have made great things happen. By simply listening to this radio show you’re casting your vote for “green” and you make it possible for us to not only keep our message going out, but to also have a huge gathering of the green contingent.

We’re privileged to be able to bring you this show every week and it’s our hope to entertain and deliver useful, energy saving tips as we also try to give you the latest information available regarding all things “Green”… speaking of which, we have a lot of great news coming out of the green technology and green products sectors, so if you haven’t finished your Holiday gift shopping, we may have some ideas for you.

I’m Doug Hunt and next to me is my co-host, Paul Hughes. Good morning my green large Elf... what is goin’ on this green holiday season?

Paul: A lot my tiny Red nosed co host....how are those Holiday Parties?

Doug...well ...Paul... let's check out some holiday gifts here

1. Passage of the Federal Energy Bill…

CAFE standards are up 35 mpg by 2020... Woo hooo... that's somewhat of a minor plus… pretty much the rest of the energy provisions of the bill was scuttled... a little disappointing on the eve of the Bali conference....
Oh Yeah...The Good Part.... the gift is.... that most of the congressmen and senators who voted for those provisions in the bill that were scuttled: (mostly green energy incentives, tax breaks and subsidies were cut), have vowed to press on and bring it all back up in the next session. Stocking Stuffer: the watered down bill was only passed by one vote and this is the opposition in his last gasps and looks like a winner next year for passage....

  1. But here is Santa's rant. It doesn't matter whether they pass café standards of 35 miles to the gallon for the year 2020 or not, which by the way still is allows me to own a truck that only gets 22 or 23 miles to the gallon in the year 2019.
These people don't get it in DC... That it’s not going to happen. And Santa knows why. Because you aren't going to buy them. The Senate and Congress and the president can pass all the legislation they want... but America is waking up..... and it’s waking up quickly. What matters is where and how you spend your money. That’s it. That’s all. If you don't buy all the gas guzzling models that they want you to...and you buy the plug-ins, hybrids, and electric cars as fast as they come out, then that’s what matters and that is the only thing that matters. And pretty soon that will be all that manufacturers will make....Americas stocking stuffer here is that you get to determine just exactly what the café standard average is by what you buy. You are the market.... you are the power... don't get pushed around... you must be the change you wish to see in the world... Ghandi... yeah, I quoted Gandhi… so what of it? By the way the DE, MD, and PA Senators were all on the right side of this bill (although, Arlen Spector gets the Anti-Green Grinch Award). Aside from him, we are proud of the others for voting for the energy provisions and in some case against some of their colleagues. Happy New Year... we’re confident that we’ll get it next year....
  2. A big present wrapped in blue and green is that..... it looks like the PSC is going to vote that Delmarva sign an agreement with Bluewaterwind. Having reviewed the synopsis of the contract and now noticing that the provisions for operations and maintenance fall on bluewaterwind... and that the cost is less.... it looks like, and my sources, (the really smart elves in lower DE), say that the recommendation is coming and that the deal looks good....The stocking stuffer here is that these lower prices do even include money that won’t be spent on the health or pollution issues associated with our current methods of generating power. This is the part that is not getting the press it should. We’re using fossil fuels and killing ourselves and our planet. No we can use renewable sources of energy and stop hurting ourselves and our environment in the process. Talk about a “win-win”! That makes cents and it makes sense! HO HO HO!!!
  3. Closer to home, we find another gift under the Yuletide Evergreen. In terms of clean energy in the State of Delaware: The sustainable energy utility, which one lawmaker called one of the General assembly's most important actions this year, will be a nonprofit organization promoting the use of sustainable energy and subsidizing the cost of energy efficient appliances and motor vehicles, as well as home and business-based renewable energy systems. Ho ho ho....GO GO GO More later in the show....

Doug: I don’t want to beat it to death, but I’m going to anyway! “ The Great Green Expo” on March 29, 2008 at the Chase Riverfront Center – green vendors, speakers, celebrities and cars – fun stuff for the kids and great information for the grown-ups… a guaranteed good-time for all. Again, March 29, 2008 at the Chase Riverfront Center. Put it down… mark it in your calendar… this is a must-see! Before we get started, we need to thank our sponsors… Paul?

Thanks to: – CMI Solar Electric......Energy Services Group....... Suntrust Mortgage of Christiana...Myecoagent.com and Option Insurance Group. Also, Mark Unruh for the great music…. and listen to Scott Birney’s program on WVUD - 91.3 FM on Fridays…

By the way, Today::::: The Green Xmas gift tip. Give your gifts in re-usable, recycled cloth bags that can be used for shopping and going to the grocery store. So by giving a gift within the gift of a bag you're actually showing your friends what it is and how to use it.... if they don't get it... then take it back and use it yourself. They won't know that the bag was a gift and now you get a free gift for yourself. Merry Christmas! Protect us Doug…

Top 10 Green Fox Ideas for Christmas.

  1. Put a programmer or timer on your Christmas lights.
  2. Use half the Christmas lights you normally do by spacing the lights farther apart.
  3. Use LED lights where you can.
  4. Save money by throwing a robust potluck Christmas party and make sure that you set up carpooling for people who are farther away from the party. And speaking of being lit, make sure the designated driver isn't.
  5. Bogo lights.... sunnightsolar.com....
.... and letters to recovering soldiers
    Send before the 27th to....
      WE Support Your Recovery
      c/o American Red Cross

      Savage, MD 20763-0419
  6. Give a gift to a needy family and....Yeah ...do this.... send a card to Uncle Jerry explaining that the money that you normally spend on his bottle of scotch for Christmas got re-routed to buy clothes for a needy family instead. Write thank you, Love You and I just saved you the cost of rehab Merry Christmas and happy new year.
  7. Give gifts of CFLs, solar powered lights, low flush faucets and showerheads, organic foods, fair trade chocolates & coffee, bamboo fiber clothing, organic cotton clothing, etc... as examples of great gifts and steering people in the right direction.
  8. Give gifts of stocks in emerging and established green technologies. Solar companies, windpower, wavepower, etc... also companies supporting green tech companies. So many stocks are trading at 2, 3, 4 and five dollars a share at this point and with a little better research it could be a very exciting gift for the future.... especially for kids because they'll become educated and they'll have fun while investing in and ensuring a greener future.
  9. Just for kicks, run and fill your car with gasoline and go around the neighborhood turf people's lawns...... Just wanted to see if you're listening..... for some of you it's very early on a Sunday morning... I mean a holiday Sunday morning.... are you up yet?.... just checking... by the way, don't turf anybody's lawn, you might want to take out a few of those annoying plastic Santas though.... but just don't get caught....
  10. The final tip for Christmas, at least for this run, is to go out and enjoy the season, drink in a moment, go visit a park, walk in the woods, go to the Philadelphia zoo or places of beauty that remind you that things are okay, might be getting a little warm... but they're still okay and this is a great planet and a great season and a wonderful place to be. Ho ho ho
