Eco-Vacation - Part Trois

Ben Green and his wife Doris along with their children Toby & Sally are on their eco-vacation, a road trip to Nashville, but found difficulties when they ran out of fuel, just outside the Music City. Much to their delight, Willie Nelson and his cohorts happened by in the tour bus and graciously picked up our friends to drive them to a fueling station where bio-diesel is available. The Green’s are beside themselves, being in the company of so many enviro-friendly, green superstars, like Bonnie Raitt and Dave Matthews. And aside from being inside a questionably smoke-filled bus, they’re having quite the time.

Ben: Well Mr. Nelson, we can’t thank you enough for your hospitality. You’ve been too kind. I’m curious though, why do you keep it so dark in here? I can hardly see.

Willie: Well Ben, we try and conserve energy when we can. If you need some light, you can use one of our BOGO lights.

Ben: What’s a BOGO light?

Willie: It’s a hand held flashlight that uses clean LED light from rechargeable solar-powered batteries. Here, we have a bunch of them. For every one we buy, a free one goes to someone in a third world country where they have no electicity.

Ben: Wow, now that’s a great idea! Do you see this Toby?

Toby: That’s pretty cool dad, but I’m starting to get hungry. Are we going to stop to eat anytime soon Mr. Nelson?

Willie: No need to stop folks, just help yourselves to a bowl of my cream of mushroom soup. It’s made from wild, organic mushrooms. It’s right there on the stove. Just grab a bowl and have some.

Sally: Thanks Mr. Nelson. I’m really hungry too. I don’t understand why though. I only ate like an hour ago. Hey, are these those bowls that are made from corn protein?

Willie: Good eye young lady, they are. We can use them and wash them a couple hundred times and then when we throw them away, they’re completely biodegradable.

Ben: This soup is excellent Mr. Nelson! What’s your secret?

Willie: I could tell you Ben, but then I’d have to kill you. Just kidding… family secret.

Sally: Dad, I’m feeling a little weird and I think I’m seeing dead people. George Harrison and Patsy Cline are over there talking with Sam Cooke.
Ben: You know sweetheart, I’m feeling a little odd myself. I just saw Duane Allman and John Coltrane jamming with Mama Cass.

Willie: It’s ok folks, that’s just the soup. I’m looking at Elvis, Jim Croce and Kurt Cobain having an in depth conversation with Roy Orbison and Ella Fitzgerald.

Sally: Look dad, Janice Joplin is rubbing Buddy Holly’s shoulders and Keith Moon is painting Moms Mabley’s toenails.

Ben: Ooooh, I was having fun until that one. Who is that? Bobby Darin and Jimi Hendrix? And look there! Muddy Waters and Andy Gibb are playing poker with Dean Martin and John Bonham!

Toby: That’s nothing… Joey Ramone is eating pizza with Judy Garland and Michael Jackson’s nose.

Willie: We probably should have done this on last week’s show considering it’s all about music. We see these folks all the time… John Lennon, Jim Morrison, Sid Vicious, Bob Marley, Lowell George, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Cole Porter, Jackie Wilson, Otis Redding, Louie Armstrong, Danny Kay… we see ‘em all… over and over again. We recycle everything here, including our visions.

Sally: That’s pretty impressive Mr. Nelson. When will I stop seeing dead people?

Willie: Shouldn’t be more than a few hours darlin’. Be patient though… in the meantime you may just see Ray Charles or Tupac Shakur or Mozart.

Toby: I see Bono. I didn’t know he was dead!

Willie: He isn’t, but he’s conviced he’s God, so he shows up here all the time.

Ben: Hey kids… I haven’t seen your mother for a while. What do you think that means?

Sally: Uh duh Dad. It means she’s not dead yet. Is that Jerry Garcia and Mel Torme tip-toeing through the organic tulips with Tiny Tim?

Toby: No… I think it’s Frank Sinatra and Harry Nilsson walking the fair-trade line with Johnny Cash and Lawrence Welk.

Ben: Why’s Phil Spector here? He’s not dead yet.

Willie: Well, he might as well be…

Join us next week when the tour bus finally makes it to the fueling station.

It’s time for Listener Letters. What do we have Doug?

Our first letter Tom Paine of Wilmington Delaware : I've been thinking about putting solar panels on my house where can I find out how to do this and you keep talking about rebate money from the state does the federal government also give you money?

A. probably not a good idea to put them on by yourself of course we recommend one of our sponsors CMI electric and not only do they put them on your roof but they take care of the paperwork to rebate money and training you how to use the system I guess the federal government does have a 30% rebate but only up until $2000 hopefully by 2009 this will change and the federal government will be giving you more money. The rebates in Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania are different programs are different they require different process in different paperwork. All of which can be handled by CMI electric. I just got word the other day that Pennsylvania will be ushering in a new program in early 2008 and Maryland's REC program should be approved in the next couple months things are looking good for solar.

Our next question comes from Steven Frank of Claymont Delaware. I hear Doug is a collector of rubber chickens I'm wondering where I could go to find some rubber chickens to start my own collection?

Our last question comes from Sarah Monero, of Chesapeake city Maryland. Sarah asks: I looked on the side of all of my appliances and some of them say UL Listed, what does this mean?

UL is the logo for Underwriters Laboratory. They test devices to ensure that they’re designed and manufactured to certain safety standards. If it’s “UL Listed” it means they’ve tested it and determined that it meets those standards.

Thanks to CMI Electric for sponsoring this weeks Listener Letters.
