Listener Letters (Paul & Doug) – 6:30 Sponsored by: Energy Services Group

It’s time for Listener Letters. What do we have Doug?

  1. Our first letter is from Bill Barber.; I hear that the new decking materials last twice as long as wood?
Actually about 5 times as long, trex, correctdeck, nexwood... and no need to treat with stain and other toxic chemicals, ...usually made from recycled plastic mixed with wood waste.....look for those with the highest recycled content,... payback is quick as you avoid maintenance costs over the years...
  2. 2. Our next letter is from Sarah Dasher of Claymont. How much energy does a programmable thermostat really save you? Well it can save you up to one third of your heating and cooling cost...you shave 2% off your heating bill with every degree that you lower the thermostat....plus you can
      clean filters
      -seal leaky ducts,
      - install ceiling fans and lower thermostat which can save up to 40% of cooling costs
and 10% of heating when fans are reversed
  3. Our next question comes from Basia Dancer of Philadelphia Pa. Can you explain what a food footprint is?

It involves what you eat , where it comes from, the consequent energy used to transport your food... how much water is used... toxins and pesticides released into the atmosphere, etc....all add to the food foot print... Take a banana or a tomato......
(discuss banana costs and local Vs. shipped Tomatoes...Buy local.)
it is a long discussion and we will be doing a series of shows on food, energy, health...etc but lets just look at one example.. it takes 6 gallons of water to grow a head of lettuce or broccoli, but it takes 2600 gallons to produce a steak.....

The amount of corn and grain to feed cattle, manpower, gas , waste management...etc...Vs..... the number of people the grain could feed without the residual costs...

  4. A question from a listener, Lisa Fitzpatrick, Wilmington, DE
I live in an older home with a crawlspace that has vents in the foundation. I get lots of cold air in this area in winter and want to close the holes. I have been told that the vents should stay open to keep the crawlspace from collecting moisture in summer, although I find water on cold water pipes on humid summer days.

Do I need these vents open, should they be closed and who can do this type of work? All respond....

Thanks to Energy Services Group for sponsoring this weeks Listener Letters. Remember, we’ll answer your questions too.
