New Castle County Executive County Chris Coons

Our guest today is the leader of the free world. Ok, not the world, but the leader of the ½ a million or so residents of New Castle County. He received his Bachelors from Amherst College and then went on to get a Law Degree from some second tier, fly-by-night school called Yale and then went on to get a Masters at Yale Divinity. In addition to his day job, our guest sits on the boards of the National “I Have a Dream Foundation, the Wilmington Riverfront Development Corp, the Better Business Bureau and the Delaware College of Art & Design. He spent eight years as legal council for W.L. Gore & Associates and was elected as County Council President in 2000. And finally, he was elected to the office of New Castle County Executive in 2004 and he’s done some great things for our County since taking office, like helping to clean-up neglected and abandoned properties, making our police force more efficient, and cutting big chunks of fat out the county budget. Please welcome our newest green friend, New Castle County Executive Chris Coons.

Welcome to our little show Chris. Thanks so much for joining us. How are you?

You probably don’t remember this, but I was a member of the Brandywine Hundred Rotary Club when you were making the rounds a couple of years ago, explaining why we couldn’t (as a County) continue to spend willy-nilly like the previous administration, and I have to say, I was very impressed. That had to take some courage to go around shortly after taking office and tell a whole bunch of people that you have to be fiscally responsible and take away some of their funding. Was that difficult?

Questions:

  1. When did you first become “green”?
  2. Did you see the office as a way to spread the “green” or was that just a beneficial side-effect?
  3. What was the first “green” thing you did after taking office?
  4. I understand you’ve instituted a number of policies that are designed to reduce our County carbon footprint, but haven’t most or all of these things also saved us some money?
  5. Did you create the “go Green Award”?
  6. Is Michael Coupe the only recipient so far?
  7. What did he do to earn the first “Go Green Award”?
  8. What “green” initiatives have do you have planned for the future?
  9. What do you and your family do, personally, to be “green”? (re-cycle, solar power, carbon offsets, etc.)
