Good Morning!!! Welcome to another edition of the Great Home Show. Prepare yourselves for another hour of green information, incubation, formulation, education, and motivation… useful green insights and up to date news reports to help you save money, energy and the great green globe... we have a very exciting show for you today… we’ll be discussing fair trade and chocolate… speaking of overindulgence, how are you doing with your resolutions... have you kept any?

Paul to respond: As always, we feel privileged to be able to bring you this show every week and it’s our goal to keep up with rapidly changing landscape out there, both in technology and in the number of people who are working diligently to make a difference where our planet is concerned.

I’m Doug Hunt and next to me is my co-host, Paul Hughes. Buenos dias Paolo. Que pasa on el green radar screen.

Paul: Let's check out and see... oh yeah $100 a barrel oil.... and more and more lately the mainstream press is catching on as well as the non-green investor crowd that this is being fueled (all puns intended) by the growing demand and finite or dwindling supply... pretty much in about 4 to 5 months peak oil will be the main discussion on the wires and in the print...

Which brings me to the Green financial tip: Renewables... they go up every time oil price increase... for a couple of reasons

1.Everyone’s looking for cheaper energy sources and

2.People are apparently waking up to the fact that once we pass peak oil, it means shortages in the future and not so future

So do your homework and pick a green energy sector… read all you can and look not just for companies that are supplying alternative energy, but also to those who supply those companies, both directly and indirectly. For example, don’t just invest in a wind farm company… also look to the manufacturer that makes the light-weight composite material that the wind company is using to make the wind turbines. Look for distribution companies who are distribution channels for these companies... stay tuned here and we’ll try to do the best research we can to point you in the right direction for socking some money away and also investing in a greener more sustainable future for our planet.

  1. Publications to watch: “The Alternative Energy Trader”... mark my words… the most common vehicle in 10 to 15 years will be the plug in hybrid... with electric coming in second... I read more and more about which vehicles will replace the current gas guzzlers and afford us the same or a similar lifestyle. It seems to be the plug-in hybrid and the electric car. The technology is here now and with gas prices at $3.00 a gallon and predictions putting us at between $4.00 and $5.00 by year’s end, we’re all going to want a car that gets 100 + miles per gallon... it certainly would extend the range for traveling. The most important part of this, of course, is a plug-in hybrid plugs in to your home and charges the battery which at present gets a range of about 50 miles. A couple of factors here make this a very green car.
  2. A PI Hybrid car is ultimately fueled by the power plants. But even though the power plants are still belching a lot of pollution, the PI Hybrid is actually only responsible for about one third of the carbon and other pollutants that it would be producing if it were running directly off of gas. So we've eliminated two thirds of the carbon the car would produce (if we drive within our 50 mile range) today. Again, as we all know the average commute in America is about 30 miles a day.
  3. Secondly of course a car that runs with a gets hundred and 20 miles to the gallon is going to produce a lot less carbon and use a lot less gas.... if you happen to have a solar power system on your house or your plugged into a utility that is using wind power, then the battery that runs the car is basically running on carbon free electricity. In the case of solar for the first 50 miles you be running virtually free and carbon free from solar electricity once your system is paid off.

The point here is that we as citizens (and don't wait for the government to do this) should be moving ourselves towards energy independence in every way possible and in everything we do. Recycling, reusing and repairing… and buying products that produce less energy and carbon to manufacture and use, and last longer. The plug-in hybrid and the electric car are those types of products. We don't need to wait for government mandates were café standards or any other kind of help are Americans, pioneers at heart, you just need to start doing it yourself. Don't forget the corporations that sell your products that don't last long, planned obsolescence and believe me the large companies want you to buy hydrogen from them to fuel your homes and your cars so that they can keep making money don't want you energy independent, or using the power of the sun to create electricity that you can then run your life and your cars on. Why? Because then you don't need to pay them every month.

More later in the show.... hey Doug, how ‘bout tellin’ us a little bit more about that great Green Expo... that's a happy new year item.

Doug: The Great Green Expo on March 29, 2008 at the Chase Riverfront Center – green vendors, speakers, celebrities and cars – fun stuff for the kids and great information for the grown-ups… a guaranteed good-time for all. Again, March 29, 2008 at the Chase Riverfront Center. Put it down… mark it in your calendar… this is a must-see! We need to thank our sponsors… Paul?

Things you can do to help restore the environment

Here are some simple ways in which you can help restore the health of your neighborhood and the planet. We'll start out with a pretty simple example, one that helps to restore the beaches, one of the places that we all love the most.

As you know our beaches are in a little bit of trouble, both from pollution and global warming. There’s a ton of garbage in the ocean and there's a lot of junk on our beaches. Now we have a lot of critters who live in the Ocean that are affected by the pollution, and of course we can't live without our oceans. Ultimately, we get most of our air, moisture, and even weather from them. So what can one person do?

Well you’ve probably heard this before but one person can't save the whole ocean, but any one person can save a part of it, and if everybody follows that example, then the whole ocean can be saved. But someone has to start. So what can you do, you ask? Well, let's look at simple things that you can do to make our water less polluted and help save our beaches. Don't throw any kind of litter on the beach. Always take a bag with you, and whatever you take onto the beach with you comes off with you… and that includes cigarette butts for you smokers... in fact, when you go to the beach make sure you take a large trash bag and fill it with other people's trash as well as your own. Then, simply dispose of it properly in one of the beach trash receptacles. If you can’t find one, properly dispose of it off the beach or at home.

If you have or find any bottles or aluminum cans on the beach, make sure they get recycled.

If you go out fishing, never, never, never throw fishing line in the water. Birds and sea creatures can get tangled in it and die. They also sometimes mistake little bits of plastic for food and choke on them. Most of the plastic is thrown from boats, but some of it comes from beaches or overflowing garbage cans nearby. So it's important to pick everything up that you see. It's good to scan the beach for litter on your way in and then pick a different route on the way out and scan that for litter all so.

You know, a lot of coastal towns (like Bethany, Rehoboth, Ocean City MD, Ocean City NJ) have annual or in some cases monthly “cleanup days” where people show up and work for three or four hours, clean up the beaches, and in the process, save the lives of many animals, and help bring the beaches back to their natural beauty.

Now all this sounds simple and is mostly for people who go to the beach a few times a year… but if we can just get one person to start, others will follow. So let’s see if we can make it one of our listeners. Bring your bags and plan a little extra space for those that haven't caught on yet. When they see you do it with a smile, then they just might catch on and help you out.
