DOE Betting on Algae

US Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced Jan. 13 that his department will invest more than $80 million in "advanced biofuels research and fueling infrastructure."

More than half of that money ($44 million) will fund the efforts of the National Alliance for Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts, a research consortium working to make algal biofuels commercially viable. And a substantial portion of the remaining $38 million will support the National Advanced Biofuel Consortium, a group focused on making advanced biofuels, algal fuels, for example, compatible with existing refining and distribution infrastructure.

To put the size of the DOE's investment in perspective, ExxonMobil made news last summer by announcing that it will invest between $300-600 million in algae research.
