What are the benefits of using a programmable thermostat?

I have a standard dial thermostat however I keep hearing that I should replace it with a programmable thermostat. Is it really worth the cost to buy and install one?
The Expert Answer:
You can save as much as 1% on your heating bill for every degree you turn down your thermostat. Of course the best way to do that is to keep your thermostat lower all the time (wear a sweater). If you’re too wimpy for that, a setback thermostat will allow you to automatically turn down your heat when you are not there or asleep. Most setback thermostats will allow you to change your setting at different times of day and different days of the week. One caution with setback thermostats is that if you have a heat pump with backup electric heating, a setback thermostat may cause your backup electric heat to run more, negating your savings.
