US Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced Jan. 13 that his department will invest more than $80 million in "advanced biofuels research and fueling infrastructure."

More than half of that money ($44 million) will fund the efforts of the National Alliance for Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts, a research consortium working to make algal biofuels commercially viable. And a substantial portion of the remaining $38 million will support the National Advanced Biofuel Consortium, a group focused on making advanced biofuels, algal fuels, for example, compatible with existing refining and distribution infrastructure.

To put the size of the DOE's investment in perspective, ExxonMobil made news last summer by announcing that it will invest between $300-600 million in algae research.

We have spent over $2.2 billion dollars on algae research for the last 35 years and nothing to show for it. Algae has been researched to death at universities for the last 50 years in the US. The problem is as long as the algae researchers can say we are 3-5 years away, its too expensive and they need more research they get the grant money. That is their "canned response". All government grants are for research NOT algae production. There is no accountability.

The Guest that reported that 2.2 billion has been spent is way way WRONG and not even close it is a fraction of this number.
Just go to the aquatic species program in wiki or to the DOE site (for real reference information) and you will find the REAL numbers which is 25 million over an 18 year period. I have seen this post before so I am assuming this individual must be highly motivated to spread lies about algae for some reason.
Tell the TRUTH - don't make up a blatant lie.

About how much does it cost to get the oil from the algae. I have heard that are at least two ways to do this, pressure and chemicals.
Ready to try this
