By now, you’ve probably contemplated your carbon footprint — but do you know its literal meaning?

The Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary has added new words in its newly-released 2009 update to the Eleventh Edition, including new words relating to the environment such as “carbon footprint.”

Now, you can tell someone the term emerged in 1999 and is defined as “the negative impact that something (as a person or business) has on the environment; specifically: the amount of carbon emitted by something during a given period.”

The word officers at Merriam-Webster have also added “green-collar” and “locavore.”

The phrase “green-collar” has been around since 1990 and means “of, relating to, or involving actions for protecting the natural environment,” such as green-collar jobs.

A “locavore” is “one who eats foods grown locally whenever possible” and has been verbiage since 2005.
