The Google Energy Era Begins

Google is in the energy business.

On Thursday, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) gave Google permission to buy and sell electricity in bulk. It gave them permission, essentially, to behave like a utility.

When Google formed a subsidiary called Google Energy and requested that the FERC give them access to the wholesale energy market, they maintained that their goal was to purchase affordable renewable energy for the company to use. Google representative Niki Fenwick said:

"Right now, we can't buy affordable, utility-scale, renewable energy in our markets. We want to buy the highest quality, most affordable renewable energy wherever we can and use the green credits."

But it's possible that Google has other goals in mind, too. They have spent significant time and money on energy-related projects over the past few years, and they have a remarkably comprehensive vision for a clean energy future. As FERC Commissioner Phillip Moeller said yesterday, at a meeting in Washington, "we are transforming into a new energy era, slowly."

Excellent decision by the FERC! Let’s hope Google does for energy what it’s done for search, e-mail, chat, and phones. Google will start by buying its own renewable energy, but hopefully move into consumer power as well.
