Opportunity
Lighting consumes a significant amount of electricity for Quick Serve Restaurants (QSRs). This Domino’s Pizza had 22 2’x4’ troffer fixtures with four outdated 40 watt T12 fluorescent tubes in each, totaling 174 watts per fixture with the ballast factor. At an average of 15.5 hours of operation per day totaling 5,655h/year, the fixtures each use 984 kWh per year. At an electricity rate of $.155/kWh the lighting cost was $152.07 per fixture per year and $3,345.62 for all 22 fixtures.
Solution
Independence LED provided a 50 watt LED Retrofit Kit solution that saves 124 watts per fixture for over 65% savings. The bright white 5000K light also creates a clean and attractive look for the pick up service and cooking areas. The external driver and aircraft grade deep fin aluminum heat sinks on the linear modules of the LED retrofit kits provide the robust thermal management to ensure color consistency and longevity.
Results
By reducing the fixture wattage from 174 to 50, the annual savings is 701 kWh and $108.87 per fixture. With 22 fixtures, the annual savings is $2,395.16. Over the 60,000 hour 10.61 year life of the LEDs at 15.5h/day the lifetime energy savings is $25,000. With historical 3% average annual increases in energy cost and reduced bulb replacement and maintenance labor, the savings is over $32,000 per location. This project set the QSR efficiency benchmark in 2013.
