NRDC's David Pettit made a blog post on Tuesday about a day he just spent on the Louisiana bayou.

It's neither news nor political commentary. It's not focused on health or wildlife or our oil-fueled economy. It's just observation, written and photographic.

And it's powerful. For the pictured pelicans, the visit to a restaurant that's proud to be cooking local seafood. And especially for this:

The first thing that hit me was the overwhelming smell of crude oil. Our boat captain, a local, told us that he had been to this area many times before and never smelled anything like this.  When our boat would stop, the smell would envelop us as though we were in a lake of crude oil.

It is hard to imagine an enormous oil spill from thousands of miles away. Thank you, David Pettit, for making it a little bit easier.
