According to Gallup Poll results released on Tuesday, Americans aren't worrying as much as usual about environmental issues.
Between March 4 and March 7, Gallup polled over 1000 American adults, asking them if they were concerned with any of eight environmental issues: (1) pollution of drinking water, (2) pollution of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, (3) maintenance of the nation's supply of fresh water for household needs, (4) contamination of soil and water by toxic waste, (5) air pollution, (6) the loss of tropical rainforests, (7) extinction of plant and animal species, and (8) global warming.
In six of the eight categories, a smaller percentage of Americans are concerned now than in any year Gallup has run the poll. In the maintenance of the nation's fresh water supply for household needs category, concern is the lowest it has been since 2001. And, in the global warming category, concern is the lowest it has been since 1997.
Gallup attributes the low concern to greater general concern about economic issues and to the fact that people believe that environmental conditions in the US are improving.
