Home Efficiency Consulting Curriculum

The Home Efficiency Consulting Curriculum is focused on teaching the Eco Academy students the most cost–effective ways for homeowners to create energy savings and healthier homes. Students learn about the Return on Investment approach and the home as an ‘organism’ vs. as an ‘object’. Students also learn the techniques that can save a homeowner $500 with just an hour of tune-ups that require no tools or expertise at all.

The curriculum includes 10 Major Categories as well as in field ‘practical’ business and marketing sessions, and follow up workshops.

Typical Home Efficiency Consulting Course Schedule

Day 1

7:00 to 8:00 – Breakfast

8:00 to 10:00 – Presentation (2 hours)

  • Module 1: Overview on Home Efficiency Consulting (HEC)

  • Module 2: The HEC Data Collecting Process and Low Hanging Fruit

10:00 to 10:30 – Break / Coffee

10:30 to 12:00 – Presentation (1 ½ hours)

  • Module 3: The Exterior Review (i.e. Water consumption and Passive and Active Solar Options)

  • Module 4: The Interior ‘Heart’ Review: Utility Room, Basement & Crawl Space (i.e. HVAC, Insulation, and Appliances)

12:00 to 1:00 - Lunch

1:00 to 3: 00 – Presentation (2 hours)

  • Module 5: The Kitchen and Bathrooms (i.e. Water Consumption & Quality and Appliances)

  • Module 6: The Whole House (i.e. Natural Light, Air Quality, Electricity Consumption, and Insulation)

3:00 to 3:30 – Break / Coffee

3:30 to 4:30 – Presentation (1 hours)

  • Module 7: The Attic (i.e. Insulation & more HVAC)

  • Module 8: Considerations for Remodeling or Addition (i.e. Interior and Exterior Materials and Options)

5:00 – 6:30 - Cocktail Reception

Interim Work

The Practical: In-Field Work Exercise

Each student selects a fellow student and performs a Home Efficiency Check up on the other’s home. Each student brings the report back to the next class for evaluation and a questions and answers session with the instructor. Each student is responsible for taking digital photographs and emailing them to the instruction team along with the report prior to the next class so that the team can aggregate them into the field reporting 'Highlight' component of the curriculum.

1:00 to 3: 00 – Presentation (2 hours)

  • Module 13: Post Lunch Question and Answers on the Highlight Reports

  • Module 14: Recap on the Consulting Process with tips to streamline and enhance the experience

3:00 to 3:30 – Break / Coffee

3:30 to 5:00 – Presentation (1 ½ hours)

  • Module 15: Legal Protection: Setting up your LLC and Service Contracts + Insurance: Protecting Yourself

  • Module 16: Setting up your Accounting and Home Office Tax Options + Marketing: Generating Leads and Template Marketing materials
